Tang sight placement

I've been devouring every picture I can find of Hepburns and other Single-shot rifles.  Of course, I'm familiar with the tang sights.  But I'm also, occasionally, seeing either two tang sights or at least a second base on butt stocks.  The second sight/base is located almost all the way at the end of the stock.  Okay, I get that this increases the sighting radius, but how in the heck can one hold the rifle and still look through that rearward mounted sight?  Shocked

That was set up for use at long range, shooting from the back position. Maybe someone has a picture they can post to help explain it. Picture is worth a thousands words.

I've seen people shoot from the back.   Now I understand, thanks.

I believe the rules dictated that shooters could not use any type of support, so no cross sticks.

I've tried to do that back position same as the guy in the picture. Cannot hold my head up long enough. All those noodles in there, heavy.

Joe,
They looped a strap from their foot to their head to hold it up. You weren't the only noodle head, they are "Traditional" Smiley

I used to participate in 100 mile bike races.  Many of the participants would have to tape their helmets to their backs so they could hold their heads up that long.  It's hard to be in the "drops" for that long a time.  Of course, those who were fastest weren't on the course that long.  Grin  I imagine it was be the same thing at the end of a long match, after trying to hold your head up all day like that.  I'll take my shootin' stix, thank you!  Wink

If you ride fast enough, the wind will hold your head up. If you go to fast the wind wants to rip your head off. Lay my chin on my tank bag. Looks funny, feels good.

Sorry, Joe, I wasn't more precise...............bicycle races.  I'd be hard pressed to get the wind to hold my head up racing a bicycle!  Grin

No problem.  I keep forgetting some people call their motorcycles "bikes"............I don't, so I don't think about it.

Yeah, and a 100 mile motorcycle race would be pretty short time frame! Wink
