Stevens 44 25-20 SS followed me home today

I went to the gun show in Puyallup WA today.  Nothing interesting.  Thought I would stop by Sportco in Fife to see if they had any a.22 ammo or powder.  Nothing I could use either.  But this 25-20 SS Stevens 44 was sitting on the shelf and some how found its way into my car.  Looks to be all original with matching numbers.  The bore is a bit rough, but bright with good rifling.  It had about 26 salvageable cases and 4 really sad attempts at reloading.  Cases are very buckled.  Should be a fun shooter.  I thing I got a good deal at $450.

I don't know much about Stevens, but it sounds like you got a great deal.

I would call that a good deal. Sight is worth a few bucks. I have several less than pristine bores that shoot well enough for what I do. Brass is available but not cheap. The brass tends to be fragile and I have seen crumpled cases before. I have a 44 in .25-25 on the way from Alaska that is supposed to have a pristine bore. Comes with a box of brass.

Be sure to check the groove size. The 44 that I had in 25/20ss was only .254 groove with a .250 bore. I couldn't get it to shoot below about 2" at 100 and about 6+" at 200.

Chamber cast and bore slugging are on the schedule for tomorrow.  Then a search for a mold.

Not sure how those cases got rumpled like that ??
They might be savable if emptied out and annealed well, and fire formed ??
I've saved some pretty beat up cases by annealing and fire forming.

My guess would be that either the case mouth wasn't belled before seating, or the seater die was set too low in the press and started crimping the case before the bullet was fully seated.

I'm a newbie myself, and that looks like it would have followed me home too! Nice rifle?

I have accidentally deformed a case while seating. But i stopped after the first one AND I destroyed the evidence Smiley. Not sure why these were saved. Not sure the can even be chambered. Now I just need to find some dies and a mold. The fun never ends.  The funds seem to run out though.

Don't worry about salvaging old cases.  Captech International (nee Jamison) will sell you brand new, properly drawn cases that beat any of the old ones hands down for quality.

Under $500 is a real good price for a complete and not too much molested Model 44!

Buffalo Arms has that brass in stock.  I plan to order some and keep the old ones as collectables.

Chuck Bordman has the correct mold for your rifle, Jack. I sold it to him for 5 bucks and had to lean on him to get the money.

Bet he'll sell it to you.

I bet he would want to more than double his investment!

I will have to give him a call.  Thanks

Great looking gun, and a super price too! The .25-20SS are pretty thin walls, so it doesn't take much to wrinkle them if you get something a little off.

I also have this rifle.

They came with the Rocky Mountain front blade sight but you could also order the Lyman No. 8 Sporting Windage (Beech style front sight with windage).

Mine came with the Lyman No. 1 rear sight like yours plus the No. 8 front sight.

The old Lyman No. 1 tang sight is listed as $200 to $400 in my used sights reference; so you got the rifle for a couple hundred bucks.

I have seen the Stevens 44 rifles selling without the sights for $750 to $900.

Be careful belling the cases since they are so thin walled you can tear them easily as well.
