Hi-wall Questions

Looking at one of the hi-walls I have. It is a I believe second year production, 3 digit serial number, thick wall, octagonal top.

The chamber noting on the knoxform is different from all my other 1885's, it is more flowery, is this normal.I haven't been able to find a picture that matches.

Also there is no 3 in front of the fore end denoting the barrel weight. It is on the barrel under the sping though. Were they not always numbered early on or has it worn off.

Thanks for any help.

Not sure what you mean by "chamber noting on the knoxform", but I will assume you mean the caliber mark.
A picture would help, but Winchester used different styles of font if you will depending on the vintage of manufacture.

As for the missing barrel weight stamp in front of the fore-end, I would say it was simply left off. If someone was able to abuse the barrel enough to wear off the stamp, I would think it would be obvious.

You are right I did mean calibre mark, had a brain freeze and blockage. Does this look right. The address on the barrel is the early one with the lines at the side.

Yes, that looks like an original Winchester caliber mark. Early guns of any particular model may have had the caliber mark engraved rather than stamped. You have to keep in mind that the 38-55 was first offered by Winchester in the 1885, and being a 3 digit s/n, they probably had not had a stamp made for it at the time your rifle was made.
Hope this helps.

It is correct for an early thick side octagon top HiWall, the serial no. on the lower tang will have script numbers rather than the later block style stamp.
