Have seen a somewhat similiar "tear drop" on Remingtons, and some others.

There are three kinds of men: The ones that learn by reading, the few who learn by observation, and the rest who have to pee on the electric fence and find out for themselves.

Didn't Zischang rollstamp his gun's barrels?

I think it was Gary Quinlan who told me that sometimes (early in his career?) Zischang did not stamp his barrels.  With Pope, Schoyen, Niedner et al stamping their barrels, Zischang came around to the idea.

That is exactly what I am talking about. In the Watrus Zischangs it is more to the front as the one you show is more to the top. If you look it is on the roller but not on the Borchardt shown later in the posts. As I say I don’t claim to be an expert but I can’t remember seeing it on any other Zischang rifles.

What was the function of that little pinch mark/"tear-drop"?   I don't see it as a particularly cosmetic attraction.  I have seen rifles dinged in that general area from folded back too tall sights. Were they relieved to prevent that kind of damage?

The "tear drop" at the nose of the comb is also found on Lefever shotguns.  Zischang is reported to have  worked there after leaving Sharps.

I think that sort of treatment to the edge of the comb was actually very functional. I've got several old singles and repeaters that have a knife edge to the comb, and almost all have dings or chips from the sharp edged finish. The wider edge is probably much more durable/resistant in use.
