That's why I'm asking Ron if it has one. He has seen it. Assuming he previewed it in person.

Joe,

That's a very , very nice Zischang built Schuetzen target rifle. I too wondered about the rear sights as the Borchardt design was more accurately adjustable than any other sight on the market. It was a true micrometre, with adjustments of 0.001 of an inch. A Mid Range staff was available as well on Borchardts sight design.

Sure I'm fussy, it's all I can afford to be, living on my income.  Cry

Think a lot of sights get lost. Maybe that 104 just happened to fit. Better than nothing. Have one on my Stevens 52. Not a good sight. Hard to make accurate windage adjustments. Looks neat.

Owned and used a Borchardt long range rifle. Sight was okay. In my opinion, does not compare to the Ballard improved midrange, the Soule, Winchester, Remington sights.  The Borchardt sight was better when cleaning. No lead screw and hardware to get in the way.

For 200 yard shooting, once you're on, don't need to mess with sights much.

I want that Zischange bad!

It is a beauty!
Might be considered heresy by some, but I like the looks of that unpaneled receiver better.

Beauty compares nicely to the Zischange roller.

Panels, we done need no steenkeen panels! One hell of a piece of wood.

Zischang could even make a roller look good!

Still haven't heard anything that supports that roller being a Zischang other than the tag attached to it.  It is a good looking rifle though.

I sent a request to Julia's for more documentation on the Zischang connection.  I'll report back if anything materializes.

Getting back to the Rolling Block rifle ascribed to A.O. Zischang, the stock and forearm and the Schuetzen but plate could well be his work, it's very much his style, but the barrel is not apparently marked as it certainly would be had he worked on that part. It is possible that it is also the work of Zischang the younger who took over his fathers business and ran it until he retired circa 1940. I cannot recollect seeing anything about the young Zischang making barrels in any article or publication. Maybe he just didn't have his fathers fine touch when it came to barrel making.

Here's the reply from Julia's re: provenance for the Zischang custom work on the Remington 1 1/2.

***************************
Mr. Wells,

Unfortunately this rifle is not marked in any way, and it still has the Remington marked barrel.  So, aside from the tag from Tommy Rholes' collection, there is no other written evidence or proof that the rifle is by Zischang.  However, the style and conformation of the stock is pure Zischang and certainly is not a piece of original equipment for this rifle.

I have answered  your inquiry to the best of my knowledge and belief .  Should you have other questions, please do not hesitate to contact me directly.

Thank you for your interest in the Julia Auction Company.

So, maybe, as someone else suggested, Zischang's shop restocked without rebarrelling(???)  I guess the only certainty is that it's a beauty!!

If they included a picture of the rifling it might be possible to be more sure.

I am not claiming to be a Zischang expert but as I closely looked over the stock I saw something that made me think twice. Look closely at the nose of the comb. It has a little pinch there, that is something that Dick Watrus used to do on his Zischang stocks. I haven’t seen it on original Zischang stocks. Coupling that with there is no indication anywhere that Zischang did any metal work on the rifle my strong feeling is that this is a rifle that was restocked in the early 70s. It probably passed through a couple of hands since the work was done and at some point lost its Zischang copy and became a Zischang.

I remember hearing many years ago that a teardrop finish on the front end of the comb was a Zischang hallmark.  Is that an old-wives tale?

You guys talking about this little feature?  This one is on a Berg rifle.  A Berg rifle without any marks.  Many original rifles are not marked. If Zischang had restocked the rifle, would he have marked the barrel?  Think the little tear drop feature can be found on many old rifles.
