The caliber in the auction description says .22 ... is that .22LR?  ... 22WCF?  ... proprietary 22 cartridge?  It's an incredible rifle and I would expect the bore condition to be as nice as the outside condition, but that is a lot of money for a .22 !

Winston Churchill is considered to be one of the country's best engravers. Warning:  Harry, and others; make sure you have your bibs on before you click this link. Grin Grin

Harry does not like the Germanic engraving found on that Borchardt. Might want to make an appointment with the dentist as he will be chipping his teeth about it.  Searched Borchardt on the site. Many pictures of that exquisite Sharps.   Shocked

Bob and Joe,

It is a beautiful looking rifle, but there are some problems. There is no indication by the advertiser that this is an original Mid Range action rebuilt with lots of 'Dressing up' The rear midrange sight should be of the Borchardt design and not from an earlier mid range model Sharps.

Joe the engraving looks good, I wish my attempts at engraving looked a quarter as good. My local Scrap Yard has paid me to take the rejects away. I am well aware of Winston Churchill's engraving skills but I must admit I haven't seen much of his work around in the last couple of decades. He is very skilled and his animals and birds are so lifelike you think they could fly or jump off the side of the action if disturbed. Very few modern engravers can do very good animals and birds, and none of the old timers ( 1800's era) appear to have ever seen either in the flesh looking at their engraving. They seem to be lacking a lot of realism.

A very nicely dressed up rifle but it is IMO just that, and far from original. But as the Bard said, "You pays your money and takes your chances". I think the price is a tad too high. Undecided

Harry.

Joe, the value of the Roller is not about the caliber, it's about the gun. AO Zichang is one of the top U.S. custom rifle makers and the price reflects the high quality of the work and the rarity of the guns he built. He built high-end guns for the people of the time who could afford them. And because it's a .22 and not a .44 or .46 rimfire safe queen, this is a gun you could actually shoot.

It is a beautiful roller and I don't have the Marcot book mentioned so my question is what verification is there that this is a Zischang rifle? The consignors note is good and may very well be accurate, but what backs it up?

Hi Ron.  Does it have a Zischange marking on the barrel?

Joe,
The Julia description does not mention a Zischang marking on the rifle.
