They began w/ the French arms, per the contracts to a Tulle, though that means they appeared earlier. While your design is certainly striking, it does differ from early French fusils - which is OK, as yours is truly custom and sharp looking!

On early arms, the breech section was tapered octagonal and the smallest width of the octagonal section width was just the height of the rounded band. Also, the last 2" of the edges between the top flats that showed, were faceted to 16-flats.

All of my single shots shoot one tiny ragged hole with cast bullets ... it's just the following shots that tend to open up my groups Wink ...
