2.5 Years and finally completed.

Posted about this here a long long time ago.  Finally its done and in the safe.  Anyway, wanted to share:

Took a bit over 2.5 years but its in the stable as they say. Smiley

Started life as a Winchester Miroku made low wall in 22.250.  That became the doner action.  Swapped out the factory barrel for a Lilja and we chambered it in .257 Roberts.  Starts out Octagonal and switches to round with a wedding ring transition.  The pistol grip factory stock became a pattern stock and we switched it to the traditional straight stock with a perchbelly.

Also added the ebony inlet in the forearm like the old factory Low Walls had.  Had a front swivel added to the barrel and a swivel inlet into the buttstock.  Black leather covered recoil pad added.  Bench made base and Tally Rings.  Everything re-case colored by the same company that does the current Browning inports.  Couldn't do bone charcoal for a couple of different reasons.

Side pins and falling block were Nitre Blued.  Guess that's about it other then the fact that is feather crotch black walnut that I located in Iowa of all places.  Gun was checkered in 24 LPI.  Anyway, here are the pictures:

PS.  All work (except checkering) was done by John Myers in Boyce Va.

PS.  Scope is a 2.5 x 8 Power Leupold VXIII.

More pictures if it ever stops snowing

Very nice. Welcome to the quarter-bore club. You will have to cast up some bullets and figure out a load and bring it along to Chris' matches at Thurmont, MD. First one is the second weekend of April.

I may be a newbie around here, but it's my opinion that rifle is too beautiful to shoot!  Wink

Here's a bit larger pic of the wedding ring transition.  Unfortunately we have 18" of snow on the ground and better pics will come in the next week (I hope).

Feather crotch walnut on this is quite stunning.  A blind squirrel can find an acorn once and a while.  I lucked out and found that blank on Gunbroker for next to nothing.  Al Lind in Washington State rough turned the blank said if I could ever find any more like that he would buy them from me.  John is good with a lathe, not many folks would want to do one of these.  Kind of old school.

Thank's , that is better, but still dark !!!  Try using a focal light on the area !!!  It's just like shooting, practice, practice, practice...  Looking forward to when the snow melt's !!!  I'm in central Ohio and looking for some grass to cut too.....

vaturkey, I'm new to all of this stuff, so keeping that in mind, can you tell me if the wedding ring transition is just a "purdy" thing, or is there some physical/mechanical benefit?  Also, why even transition from a (beautiful) Octagon barrel to round any way?  What benefit other than weight?

Frankly, my gunsmith talked me into it.  He said it really screams custom as compared to regular octagonal barrel and shows the ability of lathe operator.  I've seen a number of octagonal to round transitions without the wedding ring transition point and those didn't cut it for me.  I also did some research and quite few muzzleloaders made in Europe in the late 1700-late 1800's went half round/half octagonal.

Have to admit I saw this one posted that was done on a ruger number 1 and thought it was pretty interesting:

PS.  This gun is no lightweight, although it is short.  Weight as she sits scoped is 8 lbs 1 oz.

Chris,
You may be new, but you can never have too many questions! That's the only way any of us learn, is to ask.

Simply stunningly beautiful. I love that wood, and I have little doubt that every stock maker in the USA would buy from you if you could find a regular supply or even a half dozen pieces like that. Congratulations.
Cool
