Purchased a Rolling Block-Tell me what I bought?

I know, a fool and his money are soon parted. I sometimes get an itch to pick up a .22 that I see, and this is one of those times. It just looked like a mini Buffalo rifle, so I bought it. If anyone is knowledgeable about the Rolling Blocks, please tell me what I just bought, and any strengths or weaknesses, or anything I need to know before I shoot the little thing. I appreciate the help!

It looks like you bought a Remington #2 rolling block rifle in .22 long rifle that has been reconditioned. It should be a fine .22 rifle. You'll never wear it out shooting it. I think you did OK. #2 rolling blocks are scarce.

It's a #2 Rolling Block,  the reason it looks like a Buffalo Rifle is that it is a smaller version (-ish) of a #1.  The #1's were used on the plains in large calibers.  Your #2 is a fine looking rifle.   Looks too pretty not to have been reconditioned , but from the photos, it was well done.

Amanda,
Very nice looking rework. The only shortcoming I can think of with the #2 is the complex trigger spring. It's a multi-leaf affair that works with the trigger, breachblock and ejector, if I remember right. Very interesting tang sight. Never seen one like it before.

Thanks guys! The seller was upfront about it being reworked to pretty it up. I shoot everything I own, so it being prettied up doesn't bother me. I guess I was wondering if it was old enough to have been an original BP .22LR (I assume that there was actually a BP .22LR cartridge made, having never seen one). If so, how do I go about telling the age of the rifle?

I think you did very well, especially if that tang sight is a original Remington.

Amanda,

.22 RF rounds were made containing Black Powder in both short and long cartridge lengths, I'm not quite sure when the .22LR was developed. I have had rounds of this calibre with LESMOKE propellant which I believe was a duplex load in the early days of smokeless. I don't want to be pedantic but you didn't buy a falling block rifle, it's a Rolling Block. A very nice one as well. With enough practice you ought to be able to get your thanksgiving Turkey with a headshot, if that's allowed.  Undecided

Nice rifle, I saw that yesterday and thought it would sell well.  I think the price was quite reasonable for what it is.

The #2 rolling blocks are a nice weight for field carry and use.  As said before, it will work well and won't wear out in your lifetime.  It was made in the 1880's, so definitely in the blackpowder era.  However, perfectly good to use with modern .22 lr ammo.

No. That slight curve of the upper tang required a special sight base to match it, but this isn't it.

Was a mixture of BP & some variety of smokeless, but not a duplex loading; made up to 1947.

I have owned a #2 for 25 years, and been looking for a proper tang sight all that time - have not found one yet.  Number 2's are scarce, but tang sites that fit them correctly are just about impossible to find.

That's a fact.  What I did with the only #2 I ever had was place two O-rings under the screw holes of a regular flat-base Lyman sight, which compensated, more or less, for the curve of the upper tang.  Crude, but as well as I recall from 30 yrs ago, worked OK.

The calibers on #2's are stamped on the bottom flat, in front of the forearm. If this gun was originally a .22 it will be stamped ".22".

As far as tang sites, I use Baldwin sights on all my Remingtons (#2, #3, #1 and #1 1/2). The hole spacing is the same and there is no fitment issues, so one base fits all of them.
