Does a coil spring highwall make a better shooter than a leaf spring??  I've read a couple of things recently that suggest they do. What do you guys that shoot them think?  Bob

Removal of the flat spring (which is attached to the barrel) allows you to install a forearm hanger to free float your barrel. Improves accuracy without the forearm touching the barrel.

Dave,
Is it more about the vibrations transferred to the barrel by the spring when the hammer drops or by the forearm touching the barrel?  Does glass bedding the forearm help?  Do you know how the hanger is mounted to the receiver?  Thanks for all the help.  Bob

Think it depends on your use. No one I shoot BPCR/BPTR with that uses a High Wall (which includes me) worries about bedding or suspending the forearm and they are mostly AAA & Master shooters (except me, of course Wink), including our several time nat'l champion. However, if you are looking for a rifle for shooting from a rest and are interested in group size, then as many tricks as you use to your advantage should be considered.

The hanger for the forearm eliminates both the vibrations from the removed flat spring attached to the barrel as well as from rubbing of the forearm on the barrel.

This forearm is attached to the bottom of the barrel for 1 3/4 inches. Rest is free floated.

Thanks Dave for taking the time to show how it's done.  I'm still laying out plans for a .32 cal bench gun and want to do it right if I'm going to make the effort and expenditure.  I also like the Winchester Helm triggers but I remember the discussion some years ago about standard triggers being more accurate than set triggers.  Some will say, "just buy a CPA and forget about," but I like doing as much work on the rifle as I can.  Bob

I have never had any problems with the single set triggers on my two High Walls.

But Ron Smith was an expert on setting the set triggers up right for me. They need to be adjusted properly.

I also have a CPA. With a heavy coil spring and skeletonized hammer I have much faster lock time with my High Walls (even though I have a heavier hammer spring in my CPA).

I have noticed the flat springs loose their tension and get weaker with time.
