I've been playing with Lovell cartridges for over 35 years now, ever since I first chanced upon Landis's writings. The G&H brass is indeed good stuff, but as stated above the current Captech is much better. Keep your loads well under what was bandied about in the publications from the 30's and 40's and the brass will last a long time.

My current Lovell chambering is a heavy barreled .22 Maximum Lovell, built by Hervey himself, on a single shot Krag and Pacific double-set triggers, with a heavy Marksman-style stock. Lo and behold, it too has a 27 1/4" barrel. I would blush to tell you how tiny are the groups it produces. Hervey touted this design as being the most efficient .22 wildcat based on the .25-20SS case.

I was under the impression that Lovell started out in Indiana, and moved to the Pacific Northwest right after the War. I never heard tell of him being located in New York state. The story about the inception of the R2 reamer being a collaboration between Donaldson and Risley is the impression I was under also.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

Really great info and discussion guys! Those days of all the various .22 CF wildcat cartridges have always interested me! Just seems like so many hotrod .22's were being developed all about the same time. Some were great, and some fizzled! The best ones are still popular, and some became factory chambered rounds, like the .22-250 based on the .250-3000 Savage caliber.
The .22-250 has been a favorite of mine since I purchased a Rem. 700 varmint rifle in the caliber back in 1982. I finally shot that barrel out about 5-6 years ago, and replaced the gun with another 700VSF in the same caliber. I lost track of how many varmints and deer the old rifle took over the 25 years I owned it.
