38-55 Ballard is home! (Pictures)

I drove 4 hours each way to pick up the Ballard I bought. I'm posting pictures with comments and I'd appreciate anything you can add to the conversation...Good or Bad....

Does the serial number stamp on the barrel look correct?

The rear sight doesn't look right. And you can see where a much longer rear sight was installed at one time.

Too bad about the cracked stock. It's solid, but repaired in the wrist and the toe.

Butt Plate Serial # match.

I paid $1500...??

Here is the whole biography of General Stephen Weld who was the original owner...

Tuesday Weld was a Great GrandDaughter and Massachusetts Gov Bill Weld was a twice removed first cousin. Talk about Yankee Blue Bloods!

Yes, the serial numbers shown all look correct. Definitely not a Marlin rear sight, and the correct sight and elevator are nearly impossible to find, plus very expensive. The correct rear sight has the little pointed "ears" on the rear on each side, and the "harpoon" style elevator.

Marlin Guy,

Can you measure the length of your sight? I think I might make one if I can't find something close. The small sight on the barrel simply looks too small.

Yup, I'm pleased with the purchase. Can't wait to shoot it!

Shouldn't the barrel be flared at the receiver? I wonder if it wasn't re- barreled. The s/n stamp appears correct, but that could be easily re- stamped. Just my thoughts for what it's worth. I don't believe you should have too much trouble finding a proper rear sight for it.

Maybe it was set back ???
That would explain the shortness.

Not all Ballards have a tulip where the ballel and frame meet. You see the Pacific's w/o the tulip quite a bit. Mine doesn't have it.

I'm not a Ballard collector but, I would think that a special ordered rifle could very well have a full octagon barrel.

Only the lighter barrels had that feature. The heavier barrels had no flare on them.

Royb that rear sight is approximately 3.5" long from point to rear. about .5" from point to center of the dovetail.
Later early 1900's Marlin sights were the same, except for those little ears omitted. Still tough to find, and I buy every one I see of either type if their priced right. There was a couple guys making correct elevators cheap, but both sources I had dried up.

If it was set back the forend would have been shortened or a second hole drill for the screw. Neither appears this way. It could have been cut off at the muzzle and a new dovetail cut......

But it could have simply been ordered at this length by the purchaser. It is quite heavy as it is. With a longer barrel it would be VERY heavy.

Correct. I doubt that barrel was set back. Impossible to determine if it was shortened without examining the barrel, and even then couldn't determine for sure if it was done properly. Almost all Ballards I've examined had the front dovetail located very close to 1" on center from the muzzle. Off more than 1/16", and it's most likely been shortened. The crown on your rifle looks factory style. If the dovetail cut under the barrel showed something different than what I usually see under a front sight, or different location, then I might question it, but no reason if it all looks good.

Looks like a # 4 1/2 to me. But they usually have a shotgun butt and with dst its a real good find.. Although I do have one with the rifle butt.
