I'm SO tired of this weather.  I think we need to add a sub-forum for guys hunting with single-shots,
especially for 'CHUCK-HUNTING   Wink

there must be a passel of old varmint hunting single shots out there.   Lets get them out of the safes and closets and gang up on that bassar' rodent.

Up on the south side of the Grand Canyon there is any area where they sell cheap permits to hunt a nuisance, Bison. So with that in mind this can be a the first post of a varmint hunt.

Taken in Dec 2013, approximate weight 2,300lbs.

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

Love the idea of a "hunting" sub forum, regardless of what you hunt with a singleshot!

Last July, I was bench shooting @100 yds with a 32-40 Ballard. A groundhog marched out like Napoleon right in front of my target. I had just seated a bullet and felt like I had no choice. Maybe that's why we're having the winter we're having here. Weather guesser this morning said we've already had 20 days with below zero readings.

Not much chuck hunting around here anymore, the coyotes eat'um as fast as they can grow. Last summer I went to a farm where I used to shoot 50-60 chucks a year. The farmer said there was not a single ground hog hole in any of his fields. There are a few in towns and in gardens near houses but few to shoot.

An old story--at least 10 yrs old--in north eastern NY & Vt, once a famous 'chuck hunting territory written about by Roberts, Donaldson, Whelan, many others.  The "towns & gardens near houses" are the only places they can escape the coyotes, though even there they've still got dogs to worry about.  No hope for improvement that I can see.

How about an informal 100yd. cast-bullet postal match to dust off those old classic single-shot varmint rifles?  The .22 isn't really that hard to cast.
