ordered a cpa 32-40 monday

I know i will bore you but i am so excited about ordering a 32-40 from cpa. While i am waiting for delivery i am trying to find brass and bullet mould. I think the Hoch style nose pour from cpa is the one i will order. Anyone have any other suggestion on a bullet mould. i am not much of a off hand shooter anymore and most shooting will be done at 100 yards. I need to do some research on breach seating as i have never attempted it before. anyway i am sure looking forward to receiving it. argie1891

From your post it looks like your choices will get you off to a good start. A few recommendations if you don't mind:
1. Hoch nose-pour are good moulds but unless you are an experienced bullet caster, I suggest you go with a base-pour mould. Nose-pour moulds are a bit fussy to deal with and unless you keep just the right amount of lube on the top and bottom cut-off plates, you run the risk of galling the mould block surfaces.
2. You state that you will be doing mostly bench rest shooting. Did you order a butt stock with shotgun style or schuetzen butt plate? A rifle with shotgun butt is easier to handle for bench rest shooting.
3. Have you decided on sights? As sights are such a personal choice, I don't have a particular recommendation but think through what will work best for you before acquiring a scope and/or iron sights.
4. For breech seating, it's hard to beat Russ Weber's tools. You will need to send him a couple of fired cartridge cases for him to make a tool that fits your chamber properly.

argie1891,

Good choice on the CPA. Not to change the subject but I see from your moniker you are a 1891 shooter? If so I would like to ask where can I get a set of origional wood for one. I have one that has been shortened and needs a replacement. Thanks

Congratulations on the new rifle.  I recently got into schuetzen shooting myself and have a CPA in .32-40 & .38-55.

RSW pretty much summed it up.

In my CPA, shooting blackpowder breech seated, I've actually found the 200gr Saeco mould to give better results than the Hoch so far.  I have a nifty little Ruger #1 with an RKS barrel that really likes the Hoch bullet though.

Don't forget to post some pictures when you get it Smiley

Chris.

I ordered standard scope blocks (eyes aren't what they used to be)  a simi beaver tail forend and a niedner butt plate.. I know what  you mean by nose pour bullets moulds being a bit tricky. I have a few Eagan moulds.

Hi argie, I also ordered a CPA 32-40 afew months ago. And like you, I only shoot benchrest as my eyes aren't worth a damn. May I suggest , if you can, to buy " Loading and Shooting Traditional Schuetzen Rifles" by Randy Wright and " The Modern Schuetzen Rifle" by Charlie Dell & Wayne Schwartz. Must have books for the beginner shooter, in my opinion. I have a 20X Unertl on mine and like it alot.  Dale.

Argie,

Congratulations on your purchase.  As you have already found out Paul and Gail are great people to do business with.

RSW (Randy Wright) has given you some great pointers especially about the Russ Webber seater.  Yes, Randy is the author of the book that DWT references and it is well worth the money.

Don't stop with just the 32-40 barrel, I have a .22 rimfire and a 25-20ss for mine.  Guys are always kidding me about "breaking" my rifle as I take it down to change barrels and extractors or breech blocks but when you get used to it the change really does take about 5 minutes at the range.

Argie,

Congrats on your new rifle. You made an excellent choice. Paul and Gail are a pleasure to deal with. I agree with the others regarding bullet moulds. Start off with a good base pour mould. I also have a Webber seater and it is top notch.

I highly recommend Randy's book loading and shooting traditional schuetzen rifles as well.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do mine.

Regards,
Bob

I think you will be very happy with your new rifle.
I hope to get back to Schuetzen this summer so I called CPA a couple of weeks ago to order a 52 Model in 32-40 for  offhand but after thinking about a 5 month wait I found that they had a 32-20 in stock and went with it. Could not be happier, I bought a 200grain Hoch mould and poured some bullets yesterday and got to shoot a group today. 10 shot group, after a few sight in rounds, and less than 1 inch at 95 yards with the first load I tried. I used a plugged case for seating and it worked fine with the tapered bullet.

CPA quality is outstanding .

Those CPA's are hard to wear-out, one of mine has well over 100 thou rounds, in that many rounds, one broken mainspring.   Ledball

My experience with CPA Hoch .32 molds is, they cast a bit small. .320.  Have been using Hoch molds for many years, every one a gem.  I coat the sprue plates and both ends of the mold with soapstone to keep lead from sticking. New molds are dis-assembled, burrs removed. Gauling of iron molds is due to burrs.
Saeco molds cast bullets very close to correct size.

I have a 32-40 CPA with the Hoch mold.  I breech seat with 4227 powder.  Also use a Paul Jones mold.  Both bullets are very accurate.  I have had very good service from my CPA rifles, no complaints.  Shoot 25-21,32-40,38-55,40-65, and 22LR.  I am sure you will enjoy it.

actually this will be my second 32-40 rifle. I converted a stevens 20 ga. shotgun to 32-40. I used a 8mm mauser barrel cut off the chamber turned it down to fit the barrel and chambered it to 32-40. I shot it for quite a while but the extractor wasn't working perfectly so I took it out to make a new one and never got around to making a new one. I also made a 32 h&r magnum using a 30-06 barrel and it works perfectly. the fifth extractor is perfect and that rifle will shoot 2 inch groups at 100 yards with ease. I know 2 inches isn't great but you can have a lot of fun with a home made rifle and cast bullets. my granddaughter really likes to shoot it and my 310 cadet.
