Good morning,

"minute of gong" is a highly technical term, similar to "minute of deer".  Means that the gong is hit most of the time and the deer are hit in the right place.  Used mostly when rifles don't shoot tiny groups.  LOL

But seriously, without starting a new thread, please give additional opinions/ideas about
slip fit bullet seating vs high bullet pull/crimp.  This would be for fixed ammo, smokeless powder
in cases like we use (32-40, 38-55, 40-50 etc.).

Would very much appreciate y'alls input/comments.

Richard

I probably shouldn't have put the slip fit stuff into my post.   I have black powder on the brain as that's almost all I use, and my post was really more applicable to that style of shooting.  I don't know if it's even practical with most smokeless powders.

Chris.

First thing, at Cowboy Action matches TIME is important, so no breech seating. I shoot the same two rifles and have won quite a few of our 290yd long range side matches. I use the RCBS bullet also. Gas checks are legal in the long range event. The bullet works great in the SS MiroBrowning, but is much to small for the Marlin. You need .380 at least. I special ordered a duplicate but oversize mould from RCBS. That one casts about .384 and I size it to .380.

Our club and one nearby shoot the same offhand single shot gong matches, one CF One rf per month each. Our club alone we had almost 900 shooter days in 2013. Top notch competition several national champions and master class shooters from other disciplines. Match has been run one club or the nearly 40 years

Minute of gong our matches means bullet strike and call have to match.  Most shooters can resolve good iron sights to one minute of angle.  2 moa rifle is a disadvantage. Winners need a 1 1/2 moa gun miminum. Come to the line in squads shoot in turn no delays. About the only thing you have time for other than load and shoot is a quick wipe.

Complicated loading like breech seating in Schutezen will get you another half minute and divert attention from the job at hand. Hitting the gong.

No doubt Breech is essential in bench matches. Most offhand matches it's a handicap. Takes unlimited time and ability to wait out conditions to make it pay. Even so you can often miss a good condition loading slow.

Expander size has to take into account the hardness of the brass.  New brass takes one size expander, well-worked brass needs a bigger one to allow for increased springback.  Anneal that brass and you need a smaller one.  I've got a lathe, so I bought a few lengths of 9/16-18 allthread (98957A407) from McMaster to make my own plugs for the Lyman M-dies I have.  (Get a few nuts while you are at it.) I now have four different ones that I use just for the 7.5x55 Swiss alone, depending on bullet size and brass condition.  It pays off.
