      Hi:

Would somebody kindly advise me how I may  anneal 32-20 brass prior to forming to 25-20 brass?

You’ll need a propane torch and a pan of cold water. Set the pan on the table and the torch next to it so the flame is over the pan. Hold the rim in your fingers and put the mouth of the case in the flame rolling to hit all sides. When the rim starts to get warm drop it in the water. Pretty simple.

I made up a simple little fixture to spin the case in a drill or power screwdriver, just spin the case in the flame of a propane torch, in the dark, till the neck turns dull red and dump it into a pan of water. With a case as small and thin as a 32-20 it doesn't take long and no chance of burnt fingers.

Unlike steel, which will be made harder when it is cooled rapidly, brass is virtually unaffected when it is rapidly cooled. Annealing brass and suddenly quenching it in water will have no measurable effect on the brass.

* Hold the rim of the case with one's thumb & index finger
* Put the propane torch below above the case mouth the distance that the bullet will be seated.  For bottle neck cases - just above below the shoulder
* Spin the case with you finger and thumb in the specific area stated.
* When the brass turns a bluish/green color (approvimately 650-680 degrees - drop it on a COTTON cloth ... Not in a cold water bath!  And NEVER heat the brass to a cherry red color.  That temperature is 1000 degrees - thus too soft and one's cases are hosed!
Factory cases are annealed in the same manner as the machine on ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
They should NEVER be dropped into a cold water bath - Air Cooled!
PS The Water Bath 'Tip Over Method' IMO will not evenly anneal the mouth as will spinning

But as is said ... there are are Chevy - Chrysler & Ford methods to anneal brass cases!

I agree with John Boy to a point, Red is way too hot, as it will over anneal the brass. Brass is an excellent conductor of heat and with short cases it is easy to have the anneal go all the way down the case to the web. Then you will start to get case stretching and eventually the case will start to separate at the web. It takes a lot less heat than most people think to anneal brass for cartridges. With longer cases you can get away with a lot more but short cases like a 32-20 not so much. That’s the reason I use my fingers, after getting burned a few times you will learn. The water is there simply to stop the annealing process.
