How to remove barrel on 44 1/2?

OK. question of the day is what is the proper procedure to remove a centerfire barrel from a Stevens 44 1/2?  If you open the action will the extractor clear the barrel?  How do you hold the action while you turn the barrel or visa versa?  I have changed barrels dozens of times on benchrest bolt guns but had action wrenches that fit the action and a padded barrel vice.  Thanks for any help or source for a manual.  Tom

If you open the action, the extractor (or ejector if so equipped for a 22 RF) should clear the extractor notch cut into the barrel.

Way I do it is first loosen the barrel retaining screw just enough so you can turn it with your fingers. Then hold the rifle with the barrel muzzle down and buttstock up (you can rest the muzzle for the moment on a soft CLEAN folded towel). Next, open the action fully and make a visual check to confirm the extractor has indeed cleared the extractor notch. Lift the rifle upward so it clears the towel you were resting the muzzle on by a few inches. Then back the barrel retaining screw out far enough with your fingers so you can rotate the barrel.  Hold the stock/action steady and unscrew the barrel.
Others may do it differently.

Just did this on mine. Barrel clamped in milling machine vise and 15" crescent on the action. Note: it is a very tightly fit barrel.

The breechblock and extractor should be removed from the 44 1/2 Stevens and then the breechblock reinstalled to remove a tight fitting barrel. Reinstalling the block prevents twisting the receiver walls. IMO.  Ledball

Bob,
It doesn't hurt a bit!   I clamp, with padding, the barrel and flat bottomed BR forend to a solid work table and use a padded fine furniture clamp on the action to gain grip and torque.  Never a mark on any part of the rifle and easy as pie!

I must be spoiled. Both my 441/2's have barrels that come off with hand pressure only.

Got a 44 that the barrel is tight in and I want to remove it. Similar procedure should work. They usually come out easily.

OK, I removed the retaining screw, made sure the extractor cleared the barrel cut and it is more than hand tight.  Before I put the bar
rel in my barrel vise to hold it while I twist the stock with more leverage I want to make sure that only one screw needs to be removed.  I also assume they have a right hand thread.  Any other thoughts before I go to Plan B?  Thanks.  Tom

I would suggest NOT twisting on the stock to separate the action and barrel! If it's very tight you could damage the stock. Best to clamp the barrel in a barrel vise, and then twist on the action either with a padded action wrench, or a large wood clamp on the action. But be sure to have the block in the action to keep from damaging the walls.

I can see where the breechblock in the action would stiffen things up and prevent tweeking the action so that brings up question number 2...........how do you properly remove the breech and extractor?  Are there any springs that will fly of into never to be sen again land?  Thanks.  Tom

No, there are no flying parts, there is a small set-screw that holds the finger lever pin, loosen this set screw, open the action, push the finger lever pin out from either side, the block and extractor can now be pulled out the bottom--when reinserting the block the rear of the firing pin will sometimes need to be pushed in to clear the frame.  Ledball

Take the fore end off & put the octagon section of the barrel in a vise (padded). Use the milling machine vise on the action (padded). Make sure your extactor is clear & turn CC. Assuming you loosened the barrel retaining screw & removed the scope, the barrel should turn off. Good Luck......MIKE...
