Buy Tom Rowe's Hepburn book. You will learn more than you thought existed about Hepburns.

I second on buying the book. Not cheap but well worth it. A must have for Hepburn info. Dates of manu. were 1880 to 1907. Dale.

If you're looking for the date of manufacture of a specific rifle, I understand that there are no existing factory records. You'll probably only get an approximate date.
If you're interested in Hepburns, you need to lay down the cash and buy Tom Rowe's book.

Although Mr.Rowe lists quite a few Hepburn serial numbers, I believe he points out that Remington factory records were destroyed long ago.
The only definitive reference date is that which coincides with Remington's financial crisis and subsequent reorganization into a corporation; which I believe was around 1886 ??
Firearms being manufactured after that date being marked as Remington Arms Co., rather than E.Remington and Sons.
FYI: quite a few copies of these Hepburn books are now turning up on ebay at varying discounted prices.

There are several pages of serial numbers in the back of the Rowe book. One can get quite close by seeing which two serial numbers their rifle fits between.

Glenn - 2x CPA 44 1/2 w/22LR (Shilen ratchet-rifled & Bartlein 5R rifled), 38-40RH & 38-55WCF (Bartlein 5R rifled) & 40-65WCF (GrnMtn 'X') barrels

The new Hepburn Book has a listing of "observed & reported Hepburns".  I own two that are listed, but unfortunately there are no associated dates of manufacture for the guns noted.
if only these guns could talk....

There are lists of "observed" serial numbers, and you can fit a number in the gaps,  but its hard to extrapolate an actual date of MFG other than with the two names and even then he notes that there seems to be some production overlap as the business ownership transition took place.

My E. Remington Hepburn example has a 3-digit SN below #750. Could it be a 1st or 2nd-year production gun - or do you think yearly production at the outset was very low?
