Leon, the period literature for the 922 (plain stock, round barrel), 1922 (plain stock, octagon barrel), 2922 (checkered stock, octagon barrel), and 3922 (deluxe schuetzen style) touts that the rifling is gain twist. Have you tried to measure yours to see just how much of a gain it is? I suppose you could get the twist for the breech half of the barrel and then for the muzzle half of the barrel without too much trouble. The actual beginning twist vs the ending twist would seem to be difficult numbers to acquire.

That would be interesting to find out.  H&A engaged in an immodest amount of hyperbole in their advertising, and I have always assumed that the "gain twist" was another example of it, like their "set trigger" which was not a set trigger at all, just a way of adjusting the engagement of the sear.

Mine should be arriving tomorrow and if there is any rifling left in the barrel I'll try to measure it.

I can now say that the 922 definitely has a gain twist barrel. Haven't accurately figured out the beginning and ending rates but the twist of the last half of the barrel is greater than the first half.

I have three H&As. not a thing seems consistent! BTW, Cornell also has at least two separate H&A books penned by Joseph Vorisek. One is a general book with not much info on the long guns but some. The other is all about JUST the single shots and is worth the tariff if you want to learn a little. I always thought the Vorisek books left a little to be desired but they are not meant to be as thorough as say the Dutcher Ballard book and I appreciate that he gathered the info he did and made it available before he passed on.

He has sketches of several actions of the "same" model and one can quickly see they, like so many, MUST of been hand fitted!

My junior has been converted to CF before I acquired it. It is octagon but has been reamed smooth and seems to have been set back as the metal on the shank is MUCH shinier than the rest of the gun. I have debated for ever if I should go with the .32S&W or line it, but to what since it has been made CF already??

Too many addicting toys!

At risk of reviveing an expiring thread, I obtained a H&A medium frame rifle in 38 S&W recently, an improbable caliber, enjoyed shooting it a little and lo and behold I discovered a barrel on sleazeBay that someone had relined in 25 WCF, the original octagon of uncertain origin.  The shank was roughly correct, so with a few hours of spare time, I fitted it to the action.  Now if I can find that inexpensive tang sight I rat-holed last year.....

I'm fairly good with a file, but totally ignorant on 'pooters, especially how to post a picture.  Sorry.
