32/40 brass question

Good Day-Have a new CPA 32/40. Am just getting started with breech seating. Have WW brass that I fireformed twice with 4227 with gas checked bullets seated deeply in cases. When I measure length of untrimmed cases they are 2.110 to 2.114 after firing. I had asked Gail the trim length and was told 2.168. Lyman book states 2.130. Do I trim to one uniform length? Have done extensive reading  on the forum and have not seen case length/breech seating discussed. Thank You    bwgdog

It would depend on the chamber reamer design and or how the chamber was cut. I would use what Gail provided you of which should be based on how they cut your chamber and the intended purpose breach seating and or fixed.

Chamber was cut for breech seating. Have a Hoch 322 200 mold to use. The main doubt I have is if using shorter brass than the 2.168 breech seating would be detrimental in any way ?  Thank You

Uniform brass length is always a good thing but cartridge case length has little to do with it since you are breech seating. Regardless of case length, proper seating depth will be ahead of the case mouth. There are several threads on this forum on determining proper seating depth but if you can't find what you need, feel free to PM me or add your question(s) to this post.

The 2.168 figure must be a typo- the books say 2.130 as the length.  Fireform your brass, maybe a couple of times, then find the shortest piece and trim the remaining brass to that length. After fire forming your brass will shorten to about 2.10----2.18.  The length of your brass does not matter when breech seating.  Ledball

Gas check bullets, deeply in the case? No need to do that. Fire form your cases as you need them by breech seating. Bell the mouth of a new case, BS a bullet and pow.

The actual (breech) seating depth is the important dimension here.  As long as that is consistent, the actual case length becomes much less significant.  BTW, if you utilize the old method of using a single case over and over, the length will be consistent!

When 32-40 was scarce lots of people used 30-30 cases when BSing. Works fine and they are only 2.040 on a good day.

Ditto and use 6.5x53R Mannlicher cases to get full length.  DO NOT trim them to 2.130 before they are annealed, fire formed and shot a couple of times.  Otherwise you'll have short brass

Head size of the 6.5X53R is the same as the 303 British. Correct?

Just use the brass that you've fireformed.  The length you were quoted was almost certainly an error.  I've cast the chamber in my CPA .32-40 barrel and the length is just right for factory WW .32-40 brass.  There is absolutely no way I could chamber brass with the length you were quoted as it would jam into the rifling.

Proper length 32-40's the easy way:
-buy Starline 38-55 brass, full length version 2.125"
-anneal brass
-size full length in 32-40 die
-trim to near final length but leave brass a trifle long
-fire-form in your rifle (two times if you like)
-trim brass to final length
Using the above steps, I just made up a batch for myself. When full length sized, brass grew to 2.185 length (give or take a coupl'a thou).
