As far as the wad goes, I don’t think that you can get any of the shorter cases in a Borchardt without dumping powder. If not using a wad is the deciding factor, go with the 32-40.

Are you staying that I am not being truthful? I have a lot of witness in my area as well as Modesto, that can tell you I do load my Borchardt w/o a wad.

Frank did indeed shoot his Borchardt without the use of a wad while both practicing and participating during his yearly visit to the Modesto Rifle Club to shoot one of our 10 yearly ASSRA matches last year. It is not an impossible feat yet it could prove to be very challenging to some.

Is this problem of case rim getting in front of extractor common to Borchardts?  In my panneled action Borchardt in .22 Hornet..I couldn't get that rim in front if I wanted too.

In my case the original design is for the large rim of the 45/70. I think that for my Borchardt, since the top of the extractor ends at about the barrel center line, if the extrator were about 1/8" taller and maybe a little wider that it would cure my problem.

Could we get a picture of your extractor?

I have managed to slip past the extractor on Borchardts with my 32-30 IMP (Easy) 32-40 and 38-55 (not easy but doable). Pulling up the lever just enough to return the extractor to its seat just one of the things you get used to doing.
No Frank I'm not saying your not truthfull. What I'm saying is I have never been able to do it. Maybe your fingers are thiner or more supple than mine. In any case Borchardts don't like having a case of powder dumped in them and its much easier to do with a small case.

I have not seen a gun that does like it. Doesn't take much powder to gum up the works. I'm not sure what the opposition to wads is at times. I can understand some of the more substanial wad materials but floral foam is like shooting nothing as quick as it breaks up. Since I don't usually load at the bench it also helps assure the powder I put in stays in from home to the bench. I think the 32 miller is easier to get to shoot then a 32-40. But JMO
