45-70 short ????

some states have legalized the use of straight sided magnum pistol caliber rifles in areas that were previously Shotgun or ML only.  ( we can debate the whys and wherefores elsewhere ) some have a 1.8 inch length restriction but most are going to 2. or 2.1 inches now   I know that Ruger did a run of #1s in the 460 S&W cartridge.   there are also the 464 Ruger,  various Linebaugh cartridges, 454 Casual 500 S&W etc.

Is anyone aware of a magnum .458 "pistol" cartridge using a shortened 45-70 with the case cut back to 2 inches?
I'm thinking that a #1 1-S in 45-70 could be set back and rechambered with a cut down 45-70 reamer.

John King built this Peabody Sporter for me chambered for what he called a 45/60. It is a 45/70 case cut back to 1 7/8". Very accurate with a 330 grain cast lead bullets.
It makes a nice little whitetail round.
Case Colors are original.

It will shoot 1/12" at 100 yards with the "Rough and Ready barrel sight" and the beech combo front.
I normally use 3f Elephant powder for a little more velocity.

45-60W. Old number that was often used in 76 Winchesters. So....now you can hunt with a 1876 Winchester?

Interesting! My son came into a Ruger No. 1 last year  chambered in ".45-70 Short".  It came with brass, moulds, re/de capper, breech seater, and a chamber cast. The cases are 1.6 inches in length. He (we) have not done any shooting with it as yet.

Joe,  In INdiana you probably could,  their law specifies a case length of 1.8 in I understand.  So a slightly trimmed 45-60 would work.  (I live in MI not IN--but MI is considering the same rule---MI DNR is under great pressure to trim the explosively expanding deer herd-----whole big honking great discussion on the why's and wherefores could be started on thihs in "off-topic") there is consideration of bumping up the case length limit to cover the 500S&W and 460 S&W factory cases.
The woods-cops measure case length rather than head-stamps I've been told.
So a 40-65 'wall---or repeater would be legal- if the case was trimmed to the legal length.   A couple of IN gunsmiths have been doing Rugers in slightly shortened 460 SW conversions--at least until Ruger made that limited run in that caliber.
FWIW the lever-action and semi-auto Ruger 44M have doubled or tripled in price in IN as a result of this law.  And the little NEW breakopen single shots in 44m have been selling like popsicles in hell as have all the 44M chambered other lever actions .

I'd really be interested in learning more about your son's  45-70 short Ruger
