Miller Model F

Print Post
I am curious if anyone on the forum has or has had a Miller Model F rifle. I acquired one some time back and have marveled at the design and beauty of the rifle. I would appreciate any comments on experiences with your rifle and in particular if you have found a source for replacement parts should they be needed. I would also be interested in photos of other rifles and knowing what calibers and configurations are out in the shooting world. Thanks in advance for any feedback, I am headed for the Shot Show/Beinfeld event in Las Vegas and hope to have some responses when I return.

This is not a Miller F. Clyde built this rifle for me . It is a 32 Miller and shoots very well.

Kurt,

A nice rifle indeed, I see that Dakota still offers this action in several styles of rifles. I have only seen one other "F" model besides mine and am curious about others and the experiences their owners have had with them. I have done considerable research on Milton Farrow, the original designer of the action that Cayle Miller was inspired by. It seems that each Farrow rifle was slightly different from another and that Milton farrow was always trying to improve and update his design.

As far as I know , Dakota Arms never produced but one Model F.  I handled their prototype at their showroom in Sturgis, SD  It was a real looker with Presentation Grade English Walnut. 40/65 caliber. It was also on their catalog cover. Is this the rifle you own?
I gave them a deposit for one and never heard from them again. I believe they went into Bankrupcy about that time.
It is a shame they were given the oportunity with Deans firearms designs.
Don Allen was Dakota Arms and when he passed away,
so the Company did also IMO.
Post some pictures of your Model F.

ninteen76,

Sounds like we had the same experience, deposit - no rifle. Mine is a 40-65 but was built long before Cyle joined Dakota. I had the catalog with the F Model in it and hoped they would keep it in their line. Quite a rifle and I am pleased to have it in my collection. I hope to hear more about other rifles and the shooting done with them.

I have only seen one Model F owned by a close friend in 38-55 and it is truly a work of art. It is either #2 and or 3#. I can't remember if he said Dean and Cyle keep both 1 & 2 and I don't believe there were very many made so your feed back might be very minimal. If you don't mind what number do have.

I have a friend here in Utah that has a F model in 32 miller short, he doesn't shoot it very much, but it is a great looking and smooth action. I have shot it a couple of times, great trigger. Roll Eyes

John,

Mine is #115, I am not sure if the serialization started at #1 or #100. I do know that mine was an early production rifle so I am wondering if it is possibly the 15th one made. I know what you mean about limited response but any and all information is appreciated.

Wow....now I know what you're talking about. The last time I saw Cyle Miller he had one and wanted me to shoot it. It was a beautiful little rifle, I didn't shoot it 'cause then I'd have to have one. "Model F" for Farrow.

Don Fabrizio used a Miller F at Spokane one year. Pretty sure it was in 40-65W.  I remember it being a clever design. It was an awful looking action, to my eye.  Looks nothing like a Farrow action.

I also got a chance to handle the prototype at a NRA Convention. It was a beautiful rifle and it opened and closed like a bank vault. That was the good news. The bad news was to my eye it was overly heavy and a little clunky when compared to a Farrow. Also when one of our party asked about the Farrow style push-pull double set trigger nobody could make them work. As I remember it was pretty pricy too.

I shoot an original Farrow with a push-pull DST.  They are difficult & demanding, but they can be made to work with some degree of reliability.  However!!! They are not range safe.  The most difficult part is that they cannot be adjusted after you get them to work.  They either work or they don't and, as a shooter, you just live with it.

How do you operate the trigger, Waterman?

Well, I suspect that Dakota will be at the SCI Convention next month.  I'm going so I'll ask about Millers then.  Yes, they did enter Chap 11 bankruptcy but I understand they are back in operation so we'll just find out, won't we?
