Amanda;
Not to worry about a 45-70 using BP.  Much nicer then you would think.
I know a couple of gals shooting them with ease, and very good I might add.  They of course are using the requisite recoil protection.  I have had some good luck with the 405 gr 'lasercast' bullets.  Can't remember the powder charge, but it was just enough to get a 'little' compression using a .060 vegetable wad.
These rifles 'do' take some barrel seasoning and do start to shoot better after some shooting.  Not to worry about shooting them out.  Although I suppose it is possible, I have probably 5000 + thru my #1 gun and I know  of many very good shooters that have many more then that thru theirs.
Good luck and have fun.

Cary

CaryT-
I use the screen name Amanda4461 only cause Amanda was the name of the first gal I had a crush on in Jr. high Cool
I always get a kick out of folks who think a .45-70 kicks hard. The Free Recoil Energy in Ft. Lbs of a 405gr .45-70 factory load is about equivalent to a .30-06 180gr factory load, both in a 7.5lb gun. Since my rifle without scope is heavier than that, and I shoot a 1903 Springfield rapid-fire sitting, I think I can handle it. Oh yeah, I am 6'2" and 300lbs. I won't need a sissy bag, I got enough padding. Thanks for looking out for me. The reading and the history is a large part of the fun. Probably why an M-1 Garand is my favorite rifle. Shooting, History, Relaxation, Lying about it when possible, and getting dirty! What's not to like for an overgrown kid raised on Westerns?
Good shootin!

You can live with 45/70 recoil but will shoot better with a lighter caliber.    Drove home for me the other day, most Hipower silhouette uses 260 Rem or 7/08. Pulled out my old 03 Sporter 30/06 with 190 gr Match Kings shot it Silhouette 25 years ago.  Kicks like a mule. No wonder my scores were low compared to recent.   High Power Match rifles are mostly 6.5 mm or 223

45/70 is very suitable for BPCS though.

PPBs (paper patch bullets) add their own idiosycrasies/requirements and I would recommend you stay away from them until you have gotten some experience with BP and grease groove bullets. Very few competitors are shooting them because they are hard to get to shoot straight. If you go with PPBs make sure they are no larger than bore diameter patched (0.449-0.450). I sometimes shoot them and like them a lot but sometimes struggle with accuracy. On the plus side, you can get more powder in the cases with PPBs because they should not be seated very deeply, the loaded round should put the bullet well into the bore past the chamber and leade. I have fired 20 rd strings without wiping with good accuracy and no leading but it don't always work that way... Smiley

Get a dedicated compression die, don't mess with swapping the plug out in your expander die.

I buy bullets from Moyers and Montana Precision swaging.

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

Ask over on the Shiloh Sharps Forum. It is 99% BP and 50% of the shooters are shooting at least one 45-70, if not more.
