Hello.  Newbie here to this forum.  I just acquired a 28-30 and need some info or help locating a .285 X 130g-135g mold for a bullet to be used in fixed ammo.  Do any of you guys have a drawing or specs on the original factory boolits for this old timer? (The cartridge-- not me!)  Have been on the lookout for a Lyman 285222 or 285228, but nothing turned up yet.  Any of you guys who shoot the 28-30 have any info on where I can have a proper mold made, I would be most appreciative.

If you don't already, do a search on Ebay for both the mold numbers. I've seen about 8 - 10 of the 285222 come up over the last 3 years or so. You just need to have patients, very hard when you have a rifle you want to shoot.

Ebay is your friend for finding molds but, may not be your pocket books friend.

Just a note to say that Lyman 285221 & probably 285222 came in several weights, up to 175 grains.  When it was in production, you had to specify the weight you wanted.  When you are looking at an old mould from an Internet source, ask how many grooves.

I have tried the Lyman moulds and a couple of others.  For my 28-30, I prefer the Hoch nose-pour 140 grain.  After the mould is warm, you hardly ever get a reject and the bullets fall out of the mould.  Can't say that about 285221.

Thanks to all of you for your help.  Waterman, is your Hock mold for a tapered or straight bullet? I like the nose pour idea!  The leade is over an inch long in the rifling of the throat in my rifle.  Lends me to believe it is cut for a breech seat boolit.  I make no claim to understanding all this stuff pertaining to boolit design, so I'll probably just lay out some $$$ and try different moulds to see what she likes best. Need to get some brass first.

Excellent brass can be obtained from this company, plus you get excellent service, call and they will help you out!
I have been shooting some of their 32 Ideal cases for 8 years now and it still looks like new!

Ron,

The 140 grain Hoch is tapered slightly.  I use a plugged case to breech seat them (cast soft, about 1:25) in my Stevens 47 with a 44 action.  I pan lube the bullets & shoot as cast.  It sure minimizes the casting & lubricating effort.
