I think the price realized includes the 20% buyers premium. If you study the bid increments used and the prices realized it is obvious that the 20% is included in the prices shown.

What does "price realized" mean?  Does it include the 20 % buyer's premium?  And does the seller also pay a commission?  Or is "price realized" the net amount going to the person who gets paid after all the commissions & premiums & taxes have been paid?

The price realized is the price at knockdown, not what the seller receives; and doesn't include any sales tax or registration/transfer fees.I do not know if it reflects a 20% buyer premium or not.It depends on the auction house.Best to ask them directly.

And yes, the seller pays a commission on the sale. And that could be as much as 20%.

As I understand it, the "buyer's premium" started showing up about 15-20 years ago, to the tune of around 5%. It was stated by auctioneers that it was a way of spreading out their cost of doing business so that the seller wasn't hit with ever increasing commissions.
But like everything else, the commissions went up, the buyer premiums went up, and then they added 3% for credit cards.Or a discount for cash or checks whichever way you want to take it.
The auctioneer is not in business to lose money; and if he has what you want, you will pay for it one way or another.

Just for sake of  discussion, I looked up some correspondence I had from Rock Island Auction concerning consigning something to one of their auctions.
Here in a nut shell is what I was told:
They hold two  different types of auctions:
A Premiere Auction, and a Regional Auction.

The Premiere Auction requires an item to have a MINIMUM VALUE of $1000
Fees are- 17.5% for antique items, 20% for modern or non-gun items

The Regional Auction requires an item to have a MINIMUM VALUE of $750
Fees are - 25%, yes...25% ! for any item regardless of category

In this case, the term "fee" is used in lieu of the term "commission"; but the meaning is the same.Whatever your item sells for, they take whatever percentage is applicable off the top before you get your check.

Were these percentage fees on the buyer's side, seller's, or a little from both?

The fees I listed were what a SELLER is charged to consign an item to one of their auctions.

The price realized listed by Morphy's includes the buyers premium. I know this first hand from experience. Don't know if they charge the seller a fee.
The sale also featured an entire case of Springfield trapdoors sold as one item. It brought $34,800. They were Montana national guard rifles. The perfect starting point for anyone's retrograde militia!

John, do you have the lot number for the case of Springfields?  I'd just like to see the pictures.  Tried searching their site, but only popped up random average Trapdoors.

Lot #305. It's at the bottom of page 6 of their online catalog.
