The type bullet I'm wanting to use is a two diameter bullet much like this Ron Long bullet. Rons bullet is .397 at minor diameter, and tapered grease groove section that measures .408-9 at the base. Is for my Ruger #4 40-65. The minor diameter is to small for my Shiloh Sharps.

Want to shoot a hard two diameter bullet in the Shiloh. The bore riding section of the bullet must be a close fit on the lands. I don't know what brand mold will throw a .400 bore riding section.

What is your goal? 200yd or longer?
Chip Mate does very well in nat'l & reg'l BP competitions shooting the 640 & 740 Saeco bullets. I don't have any 640s cast at the moment, so can't measure for you, but my recollection is that the bottom driving band comes out of the mould at 0.410 from my mould. Have not measured the nose. But, it casts a very nice bullet and is as good as any of the custom moulds (Brooks, PJ & BACo) that I have.

Thanks SSShooter.  If/when you get a chance, will you measure one for me? The heavier bullet if you have one. Going to assume the 740 has the same minor diameter.

Have a tapered Rong Long spitzer to use until I find a bore rider. Have not tried the RL bore rider. Will try it tomorrow.

Sorry, but no longer have the 740 mould. Mine was a 2-cavity and it wore out my left wrist it was so heavy with two bullets in it. Could only cast about 30 bullets before my wrist started cramping. My 400gr mould is the BACo mentioned above. I'll measure the 640 at the end of Jan when I get back to casting. If you are willing to risk the $20 (shipping, mostly), order the 740. You will have no problem re-selling if it isn't what you want. Saeco makes an excellent mould and a couple of the custom makers use their blocks.

Joe,
The RCBS molds throw a .400 nose with .411 body. They've got two 400 grain patterns. 40-400-SP-CSA and 40-400-BPS. I don't have the second one, which looks to have a pointier nose on it. The first one weighs out at about 420 grains when cast out of 25:1.

Joe:

Leo Brumphrey (Boomer Moulds) will custom lath cut
any mold shape and diameter and weight you want for $100 plus $25 shipping and handling.

I have been quite happy with the .40 caliber Money nose mould he custom cut for my new 1874 Shiloh Sharps.

My .400 bore riding Paul Jones was too tight for my Shiloh Sharps. Rifling was cutting .002 the length of the nose. Needed a lever to chamber the cases. Therefore I had to go to a Money nose with .398 to hand chamber the cartridges in my Shiloh Sharps.

First bullet band of my Boomer Money  seats and centers the bullet in the Shiloh chamber. Let me know if you have a tight throat like I have on my Shiloh.

Could forward you samples of my 425 grain Paul Jones Creedmore and my 410 grain Boomer Money bullets to test with (.410 base diameters) before you order a new mould.

Dave

Dave, where is the thread with pictures of targets and loads for your new Shiloh Sharps. I can't find it.

Might just take you up on that offer, Dave.

We shot my Shiloh today for the first time. Used A Ron Long 400 grain spitzer and a Ron Long bore rider cast 20-1. 60 grains Swiss FFF, Walters .060 wad. Had to compress the powder .400 to chamber.  Have not looked close at the throat or chamber. My rifles bore is .400 X .407.
Groups from both bullets measured about 6-7 inches with some wide flyers.

Nice looking rifle. Looks like you will shooting it at long-range (1000yd).

Don't recall any of the several 40-65 shooters I shoot with using 3F Swiss. All use either 1 1/2F or 2F. Believe one of them does use 3F Goex. That is a lot of compression for Swiss, which generally does not like as much as Goex.

Have the 400gr BACo Money bullet with the reduced first band if you want to try that.

Joe:

Back off on the amount of powder and compression.
I believe you are crushing the BP grains with that much compression of Swiss FFFg.

Do you have a magnum primer and a newspaper wad over the flash hole?

Joe;
Just for your info, my Saeco 740 cast a .398  x  .410 @ 25/1 using a 775 degree casting temp.

Thanks, Cary.

Dave, sorta figured the compression was way to much. Planning to shoot silhouettes and long range with the rifle.  Wanted to see what it grouped like with full power loads. 60 grains is about as much as I can get in the case and still seat a bullet. All my 1000 yard shooting was with duplex loads and the Ron Long spitzer. Figure I'll have to get as much powder in as I can for long range.

Sent you a PM with my address.

  Joe.

Mike Otterberg uses Swiss FFF. Thought I'd try it. Got just a few specks of lead on the patch after the last ten shot group. Was cold and damp yesterday. May lead the barrel bad in hot weather. Plan to switch back to Swiss 1 1/2

The rifle is very nice. Used but like new.  Biggi says the rifle was fun to shoot.

Joe,
Can I ask why you're looking for a .400" nose?  Do you wipe between shots or are you blow tubing?  I would think a .400" nose would be hard to chamber if you're not wiping. Bob

Joe:

Samples are in the mail.

So is Biggi now interested in trading a fabulous German Schuetzen Rifle for a Sharps or Stevens 44 1/2 or Remington Rolling Block?
What does she have for trading material?
