Just bought this on Gunbroker. Bottom is the one I bought. Top is an original. Butplate is wrong and contour is wrong but what is it? Fits the receiver just fine. Winchester butplate?? Or what?? (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Looks like a WRA plate on that lower stock.

I agree, it looks like a Winchester 92/94 buttplate.

As far as shooting goes, which would you rather have jabbing into your shoulder?  Maybe that consideration motivated whoever modified it.  I like the way the wrist was reshaped.

From a shooting standpoint it is fine. From a collectability standpoint not good.

Pointed style plates like the upper, never hurt my shoulder.

The lower stock looks home made. The grip area modified from original?  Looks like the wood came from the same plank.

My Stevens 52 has the same rear sight. Real pain to adjust accurately, but very nifty to look at.

I wonder if the whole stock and buttplate came off a Winchester? Looks like maybe they reworked it to fit the Stevens, and had to rework the comb area also. Have you pulled it off the receiver yet to look at the inletting?

I've got another beef against them--the way they break the zippers of soft cases, even metal zippers.  I've thrown away several good quality cases in perfect condition, except that the zipper was damaged to the point that it wouldn't hold at the bottom.

A Stevens stock would have serial numbers, but not a Winchester.

If a Stevens stock, wonder if the Stevens serial numbers might disappear during the fitting of the WRA plate?

Some Winchester stocks will have a number stamped in the wood under the top tang. This is not a serial number but rather a assembly number. The Winchester stock would generally only have a number stamped if the gun was a special order.

The stock definately looks homemade, or was heavily modified from an existing stock of some type.

No numbers. Fit to gun is excellent. Looks factory. Fit to but plate not as good. Thinking it is Stevens stock with Winchester but plate fitted and contour altered. Sending it back to seller Monday.

I am the seller / owner of this stock set.  It came off a four digit S/N (2500's) Model 44 in .25-20SS 7'oclock extractor with Stevens tang sight and beech front, Overall in very good condition but bore was very rough and I sold the receiver a few years ago to a friend building a schutzen who didn't need the wood.  With that said, I collect favorites and own only a few 44's, I didn't really pay much attention to the stock or realize it wasn't original, I assumed the shape was because it was a very early 44.  I have no clue who, when or why this stock was modified or built.  Whoever built or modified this stock did a beautiful job.  I would love to know the history, It is obviously made for a 44 or from a 44 stock.  It is not a Winchester stock or butt plate, I own numerous Winchesters and have collected Winchester's for years, it is not Winchester, looks similar but it's not. Screw mounting is wrong for Winchester.  Since it's coming back to me I will do a little more research.  I will pull the plate off the back and see if it has 2 mounting holes like my other 44's.  Now, after all that, I need a metal butt plate for a favorite sideplate... anybody have one laying around?

I don't have a small sideplate butt plate. I restored one a couple years ago that had no buttstock. I bought a small metal buttplate from eBay and whittled out a stock to fit. It looks too large for such a diminutive rifle. Would you please photograph your stock and provide some measurements. I would be in your debt.

Mr. Slumlord 44 - Is there a reason why you decided to keep my stock that you complained about and didn't want, then send me a back different 44 stock?  I certainly hope this was in error.  I just wish I had opened the box and inspected before I relisted it and sold to someone else.  What the deal?   Angry
