30-30 to 219 Zipper....NOT!

Well.....Trying to convert 30-30 brass to 219 Zipper is a lesson in frustration! O must have used a dozen different dies trying to find a combination that would reform 30-30 brass to 219 Zipper. Annealing between each step....

No Joy!

But I had a great day yesterday as my 25-35 Winchester brass showed up..............Easy! A little lube and into the 219 Zipper resizing die, trim to length and VOLA!

Perfect 219 Zipper Brass!

I took the Stevens 44 1/2 to the range with both the 38-55 barrel that I just got back from being rebored, rifled and chambered from 32-40 to 38-55 and the 219 Zipper barrel.

And my "new to me" Unertl 10X scope that I bought off eBay also showed up yesterday...(Christmas came early for me!)

I'll post a few target that the 219 shot in the next post..............

Here are a few targets I shot with the 219 Zipper barrel. The 38-55 did awesome also, but I didn't pull the targets and stapled other on top....Shocked

The 38-55 was shooting cast 250 grain bullets over 9g of Unique, a load that has not disappointed in any of my 38-55 rifles. And it didn't disappoint in the Stevens!

But the 219 Zipper was fantastic!

I'm going to write a whole article on my web page about this rifle and how I came to own it and the work that has been done to it....Stay Tuned!

Roy when I had a zipper barrel for my CPA used a set of CH4D forming dies went from 30 30 to 219 in 3 steps.  Some need more steps. 25 Krag go from 30 to 7mm to 260 to .25 3 steps. Cut it short skip a size get cases like your photo.

Of course it's cheaper to buy 25 35 and go down with a single size using the 219 die.  Form dies ain't cheap.

Hi Boats,

I looked into form dies and they were nearly $300! I only need 50-100 pieces of brass so no way was I going to pay that.....The 25-35 to Zipper works great.

(But I did buy 20 pieces of NOS 219 Zipper brass off eBay for $65....$3.25 each...YIKES!)

And I had just sold my TC barrel in 7-30 Waters and the dies this summer!

Wouldn't the necks need to be reamed if using 30-30 brass?

Roy, wish I had met you sooner. I would be all the richer for it. I recently turned over forty 219 Zipper cases into 225 Winchester. Unfortunately I had to reduce the rim thickness by about twenty k.

And I'm sitting on a bunch of 225 brass that I use for a 6.5 JDJ that I never got around to buying!

RoyB I had a Stevens 44 1/2 in 219 Zipper Imp., think I have one case & one loaded round left, I used 22 Savage HP brass from Norma to fire form them, no trim needed as my rifle had the older long chamber. If you ever run across any of the Norma brass try some of it, the cases I made from it lasted for 12yrs of chuck hunting and never lost a case, I used accurate re-loads not really hot ones.

Roy, would you be interested in selling your 225 brass?

Roy, you came to the same answer I did when I had a zipper.  I resized to .25-35, then annealed and went to zipper.  Otherwise, the necks would turn inside out, just like yours.  Those cases were a pain to make.

You can ream necks but I find it easier to turn the outside. Sinclair makes a simple outside turner that can do multiple calibers with different mandrels.  Bought a tube mike used which makes the job easier.

Long Range:
I'm going to hand onto the 225 brass. It's an incentive for me to get that JDJ barrel for my Contender.

Boats:
I shot Benchrest for years. All my BR rifles have turned necks. I used to turn it on the train while going on business meetings!

That's a nice looking rifle!  Is that an original stock?  That's also a beautiful blue job.  Mine come out looking like that but only in the photos.  I wish I could duplicate that color blue in the real world!
