.40-65 advice needed (Read 5254 times)

	Just came into possession of CPA, .40-65 w. Badger 16tw, 28" barrel - 90+ Starline brass (fireformed) - 3 molds: #1: Saeco by Redding marked "640 F8B", casts 370.4gr from ww #2: Lyman marked "03-07 839, 410678AV, 839, 2H, casts 386.4gr from ww #3: RCBS marked "40-350-CBA", casts 363gr from ww. (all castings test at 10 11 BH). I normally use 25:1 certified. I have Fed 210M primers. Where do I start with powder, charges, wads? Are these molds suitable or should I consider something else? Will be shooting BR at 200 yds. Thanks.

	I have the Saeco mould for my Shiloh but have not used it yet. My Shiloh in .45-70 works well with the Saeco #745 in 25:1. That bullet is just the .45 cal version of yours. For powder charg it's hard to say. I'd start at a zero compression load and work up in 2gr increments and then tune from there. Chris.

Okey, I asked the same question to Bill Bagwell (aka rdnck) for my new 40-65. His reply was: "the Saeco 740 ... 56 grains of KIK 2f with the 740 and 57 grains of the same powder with the 640." The 640 for silhouettes out to 500m and the 740 for long range. Bill has extensively tested both Saeco's on his 400yd range and Sidra, his wife used the 740 a few years back to win the Ladies National Championship at Raton, NM I loaded both Saeco's with a Federal GM150M-LP match primer, Bill's KIK powder charges, a 1/8" dry felt wad and 1:16 alloy... it "does as advised" - tested at Ridgway R&PC this last May in a CPA with a Douglas barrel. Next trip to Ridgway, the barrel will have a scope on it to shoot 700-1000yd silhouettes with the 740 and 200-500m with the 640

	I have had very good luck with the RCBS mold in my Browning BPCR. I would start with 54 or 56 gr of 3f. I have had good luck with Swiss powder. Have fun....

	Ugh. Smokeless. If you insist, try 20gr of 4227 and adjust for best accuracy from there. 56gr of 2F Swiss would be a better load.

I just re-read my post and realized it's poorly worded . I have a Shiloh in .40-65 that hasn't been used with the 740 mould, and one in .45-70 that has worked well with the 745 mould. There is also some discussion on the .40-65's on the Shiloh forum right now. Chris.

	For a very accurate smokless load with the saeco bullets,Try 20gr of sr4759 and 1" square of TP over powder and .060L walters wad under bullet. Shoots great for me.

	I am getting good results with MP 300 and a Magnum primer. I am breach seating using a 375 gr Darr bullet on a 40 - 70. I will get the weight as all I have now is the setting on my measure. 40 Rod

	I seem to recall seeing some load data using the 640 bullet with AA#9 ............. any thoughts on this combo? Also, TP or veggie wad just off the powder with 1/8" cork wad at case mouth. ?Visions of sugarplums?

	Twenty grains IMR 4227 under a four hundred grain breech seated bullet is capable of shooting 250s in my Ruger #4. No wad used. Same bullet pictured below. Joe.

Pete Someone stated earlier (another thread?) that Dell recanted his 'ringed barrel' work with the use of modern steel. His earlier work apparently was with brass barrels.

	New steel will ring as well. I have seen a ringed stainless steel RKS barrel where the shooter was putting floral foam down on the H108 powder in a .32 RKS case.
