.40-63 Ballard Everlasting or .40-70 Ballard (Read 6661 times)

	Just picked up my Ballard 1 1/2 in .40-63 BE or .40-70 Ballard, and wondered what those who reload for this caliber are using for donor brass? Hoping the .405 Win brass I have for my .40-70SS is a good choice, as I've got plenty. Also hoping the bullet mold for the .40-70SS will work, but need to slug the bore to see what it is on the Ballard. Any pet loads would be nice too!

	I've used 7X57R, 9.3x74R and 405 Win. The 9.3X74R are probably the best, the 7x57R is a little short. They are all a little undersize on the case head, the 405 the most. The loads will all be low pressure so, I don't think it matters much. If you shoot fixed ammo, you'll have to neck turn, after fire forming. My chamber has a .430 diameter neck and my groove is .410, so, that leaves me with a .010 neck thinkness. I was told that these rifles used bore diameter, PP bullets when they were new. In general, you can use low end 450/500 gr, 45/70 loads for up to 400 gr 40/63. 10-12 gr Unique, 22-24 gr 4759. EDIT: Vall, I just read in your other thread that you have a 40/70ss, you should be able to use the same loads, the case capacity is very close. The 40/70 is a little longer and the 40/63 has a little larger case head. The Lyman #4 cast bullet manual has loads for the 40/70ss. Frank

	Thanks Frank! I'm hoping I can not only use the same load, but maybe the same bullet. The .40-63 was a 330 gr. bullet originally, and I use a 400 gr. with my .40-70SS, but if it seats in the case, and chambers I'll give it a try. When John Taylor relined my .40-70SS he chambered it to use .405 Win brass, so it would be easier for me to form cases. It shoots better than I can hold.

	The Magtech brass might be a better fit than you think, the cases of 40-63 original loaded cartridges I have are only 2.38" long. My shooting brass is BA stretched 30-40 Krag that I bought from Shiloh after being assured they were selling Jamison 40-70SS. Of course, I had to trim 0.2" off to get the length correct. At a nominal 2.314", I think one might just skip all the drama and single step from Krag to 40-70 Ballard. A full case of 2F or 23-24gr of 4759 should go right to the sights. My Ideal #6 loading tool drops a 317gr grease groove bullet in 30:1 that is .403" diameter and matches the bore. Jamison says they are going to run some more brass, but exactly when is as yet unknown.

	COW sites the .40-63 bullet as .403 but that was a patched bullet. I have owned a few .40-63's and none had a groove diameter less then .410.

	I have owned and shot the 40-63 many years. 6-4759--60-1F shoots clean. The head is the problem you'll run into as most origonals I've used are .477. The .405 is at .457 and undersized. The .40's back then were proprietary. Theres a whole series if stuff thats .40 and uses the .477 head size. Stretched out .444 sometimes work in a tight chamber at .471. In the early days I made the 40-70 out of 30-06. Cut and threaded the base and screwed and soldered a brass washer then cut the washer down and fire formed. Much easier to get brass today...Don
