my Zischang Winchester 1885 has arrived

My new highwall arrived yesterday.

It's a .32-40 with a 32" #4 weight Zischang barrel.  Based on the serial number and the table in Campbell's first book it was made in 1914.  The bore is in excellent condition and appears to match the dimensions in G. Kelver's book "Schuetzen Rifles, History and Loadings".  There are six narrow lands that are a little wider than 0.50".  The rifle appears to be throated for cylindrical bullets from what I can tell by using the seater to seat a 200gr Saeco tapered bullet.

It came with three bullet moulds that appear in good shape, but are covered with a thick greasy residue.

The moulds are nose pour and adjustable in length via a brass plug in the base ( they are currently set for lengths of 0.949", 0.962", and 0.981" ).

The blocks have Winchester stamping on them, but I suspect that they were cut by Zischang.

They have very thick sprue plates, a little thicker than a quarter inch, and interestingly are vented on the underside.  The interior cavities are only vented on one side.

There is also a push type seater and a palm rest that is meant to slide over the forearm rather than bolt on.

Wow! Take good care of it, treat it like a Swiss watch, cause that's what it is. You can use zipoff oven cleaner to get the hardened grease off the mold without scratching it.

Chris,
That's a beautiful rifle. The bullet moulds were certainly made by A.O.Zischang's, his son mentioned to gun writer James Severn that his father 'invented'  adjustable length bullet moulds and made them for rifles fitted with his barrels. The design of the moulds has a German influence. Some 50+ years ago I had the opportunity to examine a German made Schuetzen rifle in a hand made case with a load of accessories, the mould that came with it had the two pin locators and the vent grooves angled the same way as yours. More pictures please.

I will definitely take very good care of it and will post targets once I've cast some bullets.  I expect that this might not be until spring though, as my casting setup is at in an unheated building up north by my cabin.  I am planning a trip soon, but the temperatures are likely to be too cold.

My plan is to cast a number of bullets with each mould and see which is the most promising.  I imagine that the mould with the most wear on the handles will likely be the one.  Then I'll see if Steve Brooks can make a mould that will duplicate the bullet.

I won't be able to make it to Victoria then, but if you pass through the mainland I can send you my cell # Smiley

Harry, do you have anything specific you'd like more pictures of?

Nice rifle. Can you post some pictures of the rifling profile? Zischang was known to try different types of rifling. Some being very Germanic.

Like the picture below?

Chris

I was thinking of an overall view of the rifle from a couple of angles and a close up or two of the action. There's no rush, anytime in the next ten minutes will do.  Wink Joking aside, whenever it's convenient. The proportion of a Zischang built rifle just cannot be beaten in my honest opinion.
