Hi Everybody !!!

When using straight-case ammo, (at the bench) does anybody dimple the case (to it's proper bullet seating length) to simplify loading ???  Success ???

TIA !!!

Have tried to answer your question.  Guess I don't fully understand it.

Have given thought to dimpling 8,15X46R necks to stop the bullet from falling in the case. But it's not a straight case.

rolling a cannalure  (? SP) somewhere on the neck?   someone made a tool for doing that I bought one years ago when I was shooting handgun silhouettes,  rolled a cannalure on rifle bullets to create a crimping groove to keep smooth bullets from shifting and to uniform ignition.   Could be used to create an "internal stop ring" in the case, but it might get blown out with each firing.   I have heard of tick walled 'everlasting" style cases with a machined shelf where the inner taper has a small step that the bullet can rest on.

I imagine that RMC could make some up.   Most of these old cases could use a volume reduction anyway.   outside tapered to standard configuration but inside its have a thick walled parallel sided powder chamber.  I have had them make several such cases for me.  It'd be possible I think to have 2 diameters to the inner powder chamber, slightly narrower for the powder stepping out to a wider diameter for the bullet.

Are you thinking somewhat along the lines of the 4 dimples placed in the neck when using the Ideal Shell Indentor for the old gallery or short range hunting loads?

I have two Ideal shell indentors one for 38/55 and one for 28/30. I have used one when I used a tapered bullet that I wanted in the case. Here is a picture from a manual. I can post picture of the tools tomorrow, if desired.

Assuming it's for shooting shells that have not been re-sized?  Hold a wad? Other?  Why only a straight case?

Kelver, in his book about sights and reloading tools discusses the Ideal tool for dimples. Said he always ended up with four little holes in the case after a few reloads.

If the bullet is likely to move on recoil or has magazine spring pressure like in a lever action probably useful. Single shot not something I would do.

Morning Boats !!!

Was thinking it would be a positive way to hand-load the bullet at the Bench without the need of a loader/die to fix the proper length !!!  I don't resize and have never had a problem with a loose fit, just trying to reduce my equipment needed to reload !!!

Thank's;   Ed...

I wonder if the purpose of the tool was to function similar to using a German stop ring bullet.  While the stop can not be adjusted. It gave a variable means to determine bullet location in the cartridge neck as the tool can be adjusted to indent shallow or deeper in the case. To be a great asset the chamber need to be throated. Here are pictures of the tool.

Redwing I load fixed ammo at the shooting bench often. Lately with a Lee "nutcracker" tool sometimes with a Lyman 310.  Both useful when working up loads, can change bullet seating depth easy & with a good measure try different powders bullets and charges.

Might be able to eliminate one tool if using some sort of stop in the cartridge case, but would loose the ability to change seating depth.

I suspect but can't say for sure all the dimple/canelure devices were intended for light loads of smokeless powder, not filling the case & used in magazine rifles.  Canelured 45/70 cases I have used seperated at the canelure after many loadings.

Ideal advertisement Kurt posted tells the story. Interesting devices, not useful in single shots intended for precise work.

Hi Boats !!!

I too use my Lee "Nutcracker" at the bench and have mostly fixed on one load so that my time is spent on shooting !!! My 45-70 loads are for my T-D and RRB !!!

I agree on your comments as I also understand that back in the Day, most people had single shot's and not repeater's ...

I also have a rare T-D tool Primer/De-Primer Tool that was a key component of the re-loading kit sent to the Unit's for the obvious purpose !!! I'll dig it out and publish it in another thread !!!

Thank's for the info...
