I'm looking for any information on this cartridge.  So far it appears to be an elongated 8.15x46r  and could be made with full length 30-30 win cases.

(note the discussion on 8.15x46r Stop ring bullets.  this query is a spin off from that)

So far from what I can decypher, the 8.15X52R was created for 300 meter field target competition. Was favored for windy conditions over the 8.15X46R. Was still considered a "Normal" cartridge.

This from the book, 8.15X46R Die Deutsche Schützenpatrone. Authors - Jost Burkhard, Bernd Kellner, Hansi Techel.

Unfortunately my german-speak is limited to names for food and beer.  Studied several other languages in school  (french--ancient hebrew Greek, and arabic-mostly forgotten through a combination of inadequate mastery and long disuse) now I REALLY regret not learning German.  There is SO much I want to know about these old rifles ????? Sad Sad Sad

Hi westener can you quote the ISBN number on the back of the book?
Easier to search for it on the net.

I don't see a ISBN number on the book. Did find this link,    (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)   which I was't aware of. Looks interesting.  Check it out. I'm headed out the door to pick Biggi up at the airport.

I dusted off my librarian skills, but could find no ISBN listed for that title. For a moment I thought I had it, but using the number I came up with to cross check by doing a search, I was taken to an entirely different book title. Busted, I fear.

It does seem to show up as available in Europe, generally at about 40 Euros.

ISBN numbers are handy, but libraries and Thomas Jefferson got on fine without them--or Melville Dewey, for that matter. Conveniences are just that. It appears as if should you desire this book in German, order it where you find it. Your local independent bookseller (you DO help keep small business alive?) would like an ISBN, but this appears to be a case where ingenuity and the web win the day.

"Doesn't have an ISBN?"
"wow that makes it old and rare and $pen$ive"    Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

Our locals were wiped out long ago by Borders (now also 'stinguished" ) B&N and Books-a-Million, plus a semi-flea market publishers remainder shop.    now e-books are further thinning the very diminished herd.

Just got home. Biggi informs me that the book is a private publication of - der Patronensammler-Vereinigung
e. V.  Or, Deutsche Cartridge Collectors Association.

I have seen a few 8.15 x 46 R chambers that would accept a re-sized .30/30 case and were decidedly more accurate when fired that way than with the same type of cases trimmed to "normal" length.  Sometimes you need to reduce the rim diameter, other times, as with my Haenel Aydt, the chamber & action will swallow anything.

My guess is that much of the difference is due to a lack of standard chambers, even after Norms were established. And the longer case helps defeat the big funnel throat that accommodated stop-ring bullets.  Cases look a bit strange after firing, but they work well.

Also, if I look at the older Austrian ammunition catalogs, I find that the Austrians had different names for very standard cartridges.  What everyone else called a 6.5 mm the Austrians called a 6.7 mm.

The more I think about this 8.15X52R, the more options I see. Say you have a goofy throat in your rifle and it won't shoot no matter what you try. Re-chambering to the 52s length might be the answer. And the rifle would still be correct. Looks to me like a rifle re-chambered in 32 Winchester Special or 32-40 could be made correct again.
No more trimming 30-30 brass to 46mm.  Starting to like that 52.
May have a Guinea Pig all line up, hmm...........

Joe does it have a diagram or specs for the 52r.   I've formed full length cases from 30-30,  32 win special, and 375 Win and blackened the leading 1/4 inch of the neck with magic marker.  all chamber easily, and none show any contact marks. I have even seated a similarly blackened SR bullet (the buffalo arms one I think) in the cases and chambered it--again no contact marks showing.
I know I have a couple 32-40 cases around here somewhere to try--if I can find them.
I'm hoping to obtain a few of those extra-long 2.125" Starline "basic 38-55" cases.  I'd really like to find a case/SR bullet combo that will put the bullet in solid contact with the throat/rifling.

I know I can breach-seat the bullets,  but creating a good lever type breach-seater for an Aydt presents problems unless you can figure out how to anchor it in the square diopter base mortise.   And I'd simply rather shot this lovely old rifle in its accustomed manner.   At my age I'll never become a good enough offhand shooter to win any matches (unless I'm the only one entered Wink) so I might as well go for the fun and the style-points
