	Does anyone have a good reference for the 16+ different models of the Maynrad single-shot rifles? I've looked through old catalog copies in Satterlee's books but I am not finding it very clear. I may be out of the loop, but it would be great to have a reference like Roy Marcot's book on Rolling Blocks, or the anticipated Hepburn book. Any help is appreciated ... Joe

	George Layman has a booklet out called "A Guide To The Maynard Breechloader." Not an exhaustive treatise but it does get to all the models, IIRC.

	The chapter on Maynards in James Grant's first book, Single Shot Rifles, covers the basic differences, barrel length options and cartridge options between the various models of the 1873 and 1882 versions. Not too much on earlier "percussion" types.

	The main rule about Maynard rifles seems to be that there were no hard and fast rules. The model numbers seem to have been a jumping off point, but the buyer could order about any feature added or deleted to get exactly the gun he wanted. Pick a couple of the catalogs (available from a variety of sources... I like reprints from Abby at Cornell Publishing) and you have your starting point, then go on the assumption that whoever ordered whatever you are looking at did a little "fine tuning" on the configuration he found closest to what he really wanted, and Maynard built if for him. JMHO, of course, but it explains most if not all of the oddities I have encountered. Froggie
