F. J. Spaedy Stevens ?

Hello All,

Anyone know anything about F. J. Spaedy ? Here is a pretty stevens marked "rifled by F. J. Spaedy." There is a picture of a Ballard so marked on HALPs site and his name pops up in the rolls of shooters in an active Schuetzen club in St. Louis. Thanks and best,

Zack

Beautiful Stevens. I googled his name and St Louis and came up with a 1909 sporting magazine article and an American Rifleman reference. He won a match and there is a statement that implies that his barrels are on the same level as a Harry Pope barrel. Google it and if I were you I would print out all the references to keep with the rifle. He was apparently one of Pope's contemporaries. I would say you hit the jackpot. Congratulations!

A PM to MP and or AC Gould could possibly be a good source for the information you seek. Another alternative would be to post pictures along with your question over on the Double Guns forum under single shot rifles etc.

Beautiful Rifle

Neat rifle!  It was on sale at Cabalas yesterday for about $1999.00 making it the buy of the
Century.  However, as usual, I was a day late and a dollar short.  Damn!!!!

My failing memory tells me that Jim Goergen listed a Spaedy some years back.  The only other I've ever run into is pictured on Hal P's photo pages.

I have the full set of Shooting and Fishing including the index volumes and could find no listing for Spaedy.

Well, at least I'm not broke again,

Leon

Howdy All

Thanks to everyone for your input. I feel really lucky to have been the one to get this rifle. Have not received it yet and am looking forward to it. Am NEVER the lucky one and pretty much always am the day late dollar short guy. When I get it I will slug the barrel, cast the chamber and report on how she shoots. Will continue to research Mr Spaedy as well. Have never loaded for the 28-30 before. Should be interesting. Will have to call CPA and get a palm rest as the ine for this rifle eloped with the loading accessories. Best,

Zack

Congratulations again on a great find. Interesting caliber that I also have had no experience with. Cabalas has been known to not know what they have sometimes. I have just missed a couple of great deals on guns they had advertised and had no idea of what they were worth. The good ones are usually snapped up immediately.

The 28-30 is a very inherently accurate cartridge by design the only down fall is finding the brass. There are two fellows shooting the 28-30 in the matches out this way and two who are using wildcats, myself being one. If you send JerryH a PM he would be able to get you started. Both Jerry and a fellow competitor in his group are the ones using the 28-30.

Zack, Damm! I don't even like Stevens Rifles for the most part but that is one I would have had to bite my lip to not bid on it. I do not dislike them but I am a Hiwall and Borchardt enthusiast. I once asked a freind who had been at this a lot longer than I why he and I felt that way, and that Stevens Rifles won lots of matches. His reply was (I never said stevens did not make good barrels.) Well enough said. Congradulations on your find. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

My preference in single shots is Stevens but that does not mean that I do not appreciate a good Winchester or Ballard or Sharps. Own a Winchester or two and a Sharps reproduction. Same with old cars. Love the old Fords but appreciate nice Chevys and any other interesting examples.

Zack, there is no parent case to convert from for the Stevens 28-30-120 Stevens.  The bullet diameter is 309 with a 135 gr. lead bullet - 17 grs. of IMR4198 for a muzzle velocity of 1,500 fps. Same bullet, 28 grs. of Fg black powder will give it 1,410 fps. My powder of choice would be KIK
The proper bullet is Lyman 285222 or 285228.

Call Rocky Mountain Cartridge Co.  They will make you 20 cases for $49.00
Phone: 307.347.4547
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I have 100 cases coming from them now for the obsolete Stevens 25-21.  Turn around was 1 month

Hello All,

This old stevens is even prettier in person then in pictures. The bore looks perfect. The gun is tight as can be. Below is a terrible cell-phone picture of it. Left hand gain-twist with marked radius on the lands. Bore chokes up quite a bit from breach to muzzle. Gun is in overall excellent condition. 90% + blue on block and barrel. Old nickel has mostly melted away on receiver and butt plate but looks very nice and mellow. Can't waite to shoot it. Will chamber cast this weekend. I have been in contact with FJ Spaedy's great great grand-nephew and hope to post some more info soon. He has a beautiful old Ballard similar to the one on Halps site and has a family member with a Spaedy barreled pistol. ALl the best,

Zack
