Aydt 8.15x46 - original loadings

Print Post
Awaiting delivery of an Aydt schuetzen rifle made prior to 1900.  I would like to load to original European standards.  I cannot determine if the powder should be black or smokeless, either is fine with me.  It seems a stop ring bullet is the original projectile. Leeth makes a mould, don't know of any others.  I have several 8mm moulds to slug with/try to shoot - can size down if required.  Brass is not an issue.
Any powder/bullet knowledge would be most appreciated.

As for an "original" load, BP would be it, with a SR bullet and Berdan primers, especially for your early rifle. For smokeless loads, I think you'll find that most use 4227. Mine got it's best accuracy with 13.0 gr (1350 fps) and a breech seated bullet, that is 1.03 long. But some are shooting loads as high as 14.5 gr with SR bullets. Other powers should also work, such as AA4100, Win 296, AA#9 and Alliant 300MP but, unless some on this forum have tried any of them, you can do so, start with 13.0 gr with any of them.

The 8.15 round came in to general use just as smokeless powder arrived, so black is not correct for an original loading.
I use the NEI stop-ring mould with 14.5 grn of 4227.

I based my answer partly because they are all BP proofed and because before 1900 smokeless was fairly rare and I assume expensive, at least here in the US it was. Not all in the US even trusted it. Biggi may be able to give us facts regarding this.

I received a very nice book from Biggi, on the history and loadings of the 8.15 x 46R. In German.
As far as bullets go, all types were used including jacketed. No stop ring needed when using black powder.

Some good info here:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

So 0,9gram~13.8grains of some sort of smokeless in a paper "cartridge".
And they were huge fans of stopring bullets.

I have two 8.15 x 46R rifles, a Buechel meister schuetzen rifle and a lightweight break action hunter. The Buechel chamber is identical to the CH dies and the nominal dimensions, but the hunter is very slightly looser. To avoid the need for resizing, i use my limited stock of RWS factory cases in the schuetzen rifle and re- formed and shortened 30-30 brass in the hunter. The 30-30 brass needs to have a couple of thou taken off the rim.

I have extensive photos of loading equipment and loadings. It would seem black powder was extensively used well into the 20th century but loads varied a lot depending on range. A lot of pressed "pellet" type of black that you dropped from one to three into the case and shot.

I have been shooting the 8.15x46R almost exclusively for 30 years. I would very much like any and all information on the cartridge & the rifles chambered for it, I would be happy to pay. I have a Konkurrence (sp) that will not chamber a round sized in an 8.15 sizing die, I have to run the brass into a 32-40 die & fire form, but the chamber is the prettiest one I've seen, almost a shoulder & a longer neck to hold the bullet aligned.

IMHO.  Sounds kind of like the 8.15x52 we are talking about.  It seems to have the possibility of shoulder tapers that vary from the normalized x46r cartridges.  Mine seem to be a litle diff from the one joe posted.  With different smiths making their  own reamers prior to standardization all sorts of minor variations could creep in.  Some work out ok, some cause conflicts

8.15x52R is a "Normal" casing, = standardized. If a rifle is marked Normal it must have the standardized chamber dimensions.

There was a 8.15X24R, 8.15X40R,  ''46R, ''46 1/2R, ''52R. And most likely others.

so "Normal"  means something like SAAMI specs (if I've spelled it right)
