I have this one on 3 of my smelters:

Combined with a SSR:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I silversoldered/brased a brass "nut" onto the bottom of the pot for the temp sensor.

The controller has a relay output and the selected SSR has a "on/off" input so they dont need any current to run.

I mounted a bit of Lexan as a splash guard.

Chickenthief - your PID setup from Deal Extreme looks simple enough and as always with them, their prices are right.  So I ordered 2 setups and also the k Type braided cable
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

I hope you won't mind when the shipment is received that I ask for your help for the wiring configuration.  My electronics knowledge is in the zero capability.  Even more so when I read the 8 page manual for the Rex C700 controller ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
And if it was still available in the States - they want $31.58 for the Rex C700 controller

Quick question - what is the maximum melt temperature for the controller.  On Deal Extreme it's 400C (752F) but in the manual the temperature is much higher

@ John Boy

The controllers are delivered with a sensor no need to buy extra!

No worries, pick my brain all you want. I'll be glad to help.

Here is a diagram:

(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Mains go to terminal 2 and 3 on the controller
Relay out from the controller (terminal 5 and 6) goes to terminal 3 and 4 on the SSR
Terminal 1 and 2 on the SSR goes to one of the mains wires.
Controller terminal 13(-) and 14(+) goes to the sensor.

***********************
The SSR is not polarity sensitive so the mains terminals can be switched and the control ones can be also. If that makes it easier in your design!
***********************

The supplied sensor can go to 400degC~752degF but the controller can go to 2500degF with the right sensor.
The sensor you bought can go to 800degC~1472degF.

The one (pot/controller) that i use for pure lead is set at 350degC~662degF and the one for "hard" alloy is set at 320degC~608degF.
That is what floats my boat, YMMW!

CT - Thanks kindly for the wiring diagram.  Looks simple enough for an electronics ignoramus that I am

Am using this one:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
However, you need to insure that it goes to 1000F, or so, and will use a type K TC.
Am also using the SSA that Chickentheif uses, except that I've found that the 10A model limits current too much and am using the 25A model.
Am running mine on a pair of Lee 20# dipper pots. Just splice the 120vac line on the one side of the SSA and 4-20mA control from the PID to the other side and turn the pot rheostat full-on and set the PID as you need.

EDIT
Now that I look more closely at what you've ordered I'll make these comments.
Also suggest you go here:
(You need to Login or Register to view media files and links);
and pick out the proper TC. I went for their part number TJ36-CASS-18G-12. Have used their products since grad school and always very happy with the quality vs. cost. The TC you've listed is too short to get down into your pot. You need this probe configuration.
Also, they make that PID controller in more than one flavor. You have to specify the higher temp model or, indeed, you may be limited to 400C. Think their other model goes up to 1100C (another digit). Same DIN size and config on both.
If you find you've ordered to low-temp PID controller am guessing they will simply trade you back for the ones you got if you haven't opened them. That's why I ordered from the guy in NJ who sells on eBay that I've listed a couple of times. Since we are all in NJ he has to go NJ rules and we can return with no hassles. Also, he offers good service and when I needed some additional info he was happy to provide.

You don't need an empty pot to make the conversion. Only thing you do to the pot is splice the AC line hot side to the SSA relay.

If I'm going to braze a nut onto the bottom of the pot into which the thermocouple screws in, I will empty the pot before I turn it upside down and fire up the tourch.  Smiley

You will be reading your temp through the wall of the pot and it will not be as accurate nor as repeatable as the TC in the pot. And, especially, will provide a considerably slower response time. If you spring for the TC from Omega Engineering that I've listed above you will be getting a direct readout from immersion of the TC in the melt.
