Anyone have a recommended load for a 7mm Roller using 4064?

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

175 gr Roundnose Hornady bullet, 35-39gr AA-4064, WLR primer, should give you about 2350 fps at the high end.

175 Nosler Partition, 33.1-35.2 IMR-4064, will only give you about 2150 fps at the same MAP.

These are SAAMI loads so no pressure issues.

In my carbine I show a load of 37 grains of 4064 with the 160 Norma boattail. However, the group with 47 grains of 4831 was 1/3 the size of the 4064 and even the group with 34 grains of 3031 was less than 1/2 the size of 4064. The first time new brass was fired in the roller a single wrap of electrical tape was put around the base. This made the expansion in the generous chamber concentric and after that the tape was removed and the case neck sized only.

I've been using 39 grains of 4320 with the 175 grain bullet for years in my 7mm rolling blocks.  I learned many years ago that the chambers in these rifles are over size.  The original 7 mm Spanish Mauser is a bit bigger than todays standards.  The thing I found was that with factory 7 mm Mauser cases the case mortality was very high.  Because of that, I began making my 7 mm cases by necking down 30-06 military brass.  That really did the trick and cases last a lot longer.  Perhaps a slower powder might improve case life too, but I've always liked 4320 and the load has been very accurate.  You have to realize that the rolling block is very "springy" and no matter how good the headspace is, the cases will stretch and head separations will occur on a fairly regular basis.  But, having said that, I've always been able to remove the rest of the case without anything but my fingers.  Also, you need to stay close to the lower end of thee loads listed in most reloading manuals.

Forgot to mention that I also use 4198 in my cast bullet loads.  That is 21.5 grains of 4198 with a 168 grain slug at about 1800 fps from the rifle.  I use the same load in my carbine as well, but have never chronographed.  What works for me might not work for you or even be safe in your rifle.

The load I listed in previous posting with 4320 gives about 2350 fps in my rifle.

Thank you for the information. I do plan on using the lower end loads. Have a lb of AA2700 so thought I would ask. I also have a lb of imr 4198 and a lyman 160gr mold. Years ago as a young man I had a the 7mm rifle. I lucked out with that rifle. the chamber was a perfect fit. Sad to say that rifle left me many years ago. I just recently replaced it with a cabine. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Thanks again

I did not have a chance to load 7mm this weekend but did drop a fired case in the chamber and closed the breech. The casing was fired in a CZ bolt gun and fits the roller's (M1896) chamber quite snuggly. Hopefully I can get ammo loaded during lulls in the cooking on Thanksgiving Cheesy

I was able to shoot my 50-70 this past weekend though. Planning to take a Bison next month on a ranch in NM. Last year I got an estimated 2,200lb bull and he ran but 25yards after taking 450grs through the lungs. Probably not be able to better that this year...

Tried 35grs of 4064 under a Sierra 160gr Game King. Put 9 in less than 1.5inches at 100. The 10th split the neck and went out of the group. Brass is Sellier and Bellot and know for being hard. As I recall I used to get lots of split necks when I was reloading this brass for bolt guns.

Measured the bases after firing and no expansion to speak of when compared to the unsized cases I have theat were previously fired in the CZ. Probably bump up the charge to 36grs for the next outing...
