Vintage 2400 Powder

I have been using a can of 2400 given to me by a friend. It is producing excellent results but I got to wondering just how old it is. One clue is the price tag which is still on it - $2.75. Looking closer, another clue is the address for Hercules on the can which does not have a zip code hence prior to 1967 or so. Anyone remember when 2400 was $2.75 a pound?

I don't, but do remember when I was 13 ('61) 22rf LRs were 35 cents a box.

I've got a partial can of the old 2400, and I think I've still got cans of Hi-Vel #3.

I've narrowed it down a little. It dates to after 1956 as the Shooter's Bible #47 shows the old can design and the price was $2.50. The next Shooter's Bible I have is #54, 1963, which has the pertinent can design with 2400 and Smokeless Rifle Powder in the circle but the price is $3.25. Anyone have Shooter's Bibles between these two numbers to tell when the design changed to establish the oldest possible date and perhaps when the price changed to $2.75?

My Stoegers, Shooters Bible, #38R, from 1947 shows retangular paper cans with tiny screw on caps, simular to the Dupont cans for all the Hercules powders. So, it's later than '47.

I just looked at an old Parker Distributors (New Rochelle, NY)
catalog for 65-66 that I have. Retail $2.75, special $2.20. 5 pounds $13.75 retail, special $10.50. Same can as shown in Frank's post.

BP,

Has your HiVel #3 ever been exposed to below-freezing temperatures or to repeated freeze-thaw cycles?

waterman,

Not after I received it.
The square cans aren't painted but were left brite, and a paper label was attached.
