I have a Browning B78 in .25-06, 26" octagon barrel, does anyone have any experience with distance of jump to lands for custom loads?

I shot a 25-06 FN Mauser hunting rifle for many years. Didnt seem to matter how close I set the bullet to the lands. Has a 10 inch twist and likes the 120 grain bullets best, (jacketed). Still have the rifle and reloads from the early seventies.

I am loading 85 gr CT Ballistic Silvertips for coyotes & 110 gr Accubond for deer.  Loaded a few today to try @ .020 off the lands, hoping to get to the range week.  This storm in the Gulf this weekend has kept me from shooting.

I tried 87s 100s and 120s. Hornady.  120 was better in every way.  100s were very accurate. 120 were similar to the 270 - 130 as far as effect on game. Deadly.

Creedmorematch used to shoot a .25-06 in a Ruger #1.  Might have some insight too.

Thanks Joe I'll keep that in mind.  I was hoping to get a 110 Accubond to shoot a little flatter than the .270 130gr Accubond from my Ruger for deer (which is good).  I am excited to start hunting coyotes here in south Alabama.  I have wanted this B78 in .25-06 for a year, so now I'm trying to fine tune it.  Thanks for your insight!!

They were popular in Eastern Washington in the seventies, the B78 in 25-06. Never heard a bad comment.
You'll love it. Nice looking rifle too.  Please post a picture.

Most rifles I get good accuracy finding a powder load sweet spot when shooting .010" off the lands.

For rifles with long chamber leades of about .100" to .200" jump I use a heavy "Factory" style crimp to build pressure somewhat before it jumps across to the lands. This gives good accuracy similar to shooting just off the lands.

i.e. for jacketed bullets

On my Ruger #1, I seat the bullet to touch the lands.  The 120gr is easiest to get to shoot, but is will shoot 87 and 90gr Sierra's equally well - it just took a bit more work to get there.  Full case of slow-burning powder (VV N165 gave best results) did the trick.  Never chrono'd the loads though.  Cartridge OAL was quite a bit longer than nominal spec.
