2012 Canadian Shiloh Sharps Draw
Sep 25th, 2013 at 4:09pm
Print Post
I was the fortunate winner of a gift certificate provided by Shiloh Sharps in 2012 at the Canadian Shiloh Sharps BPCR Silhouette Shoot at Bethune, Saskatchewan.

I would like to thank Shiloh Sharps for their fanatastic support for the BPCR shooting diciplines.

I ordered a:

1874 Long Range Shiloh Sharps:
.40-65 WCF 30" Heavy Half Polished Barrel
Pistol Grip Stock and Pewter Tip Forearm
Extra Fancy Wood with "AA" Finish
Cheek Rest
Checkered Wood and Shotgun Buttplate
#113 MVA Sharps Front Sight
MVA Mid Range Buffalo Soule
Scope Bases for 28" MVA Scope
Double Set Trigger
Pack Hardened Receiver

I am extremely satisfied with the fabulous quality of the Shiloh Sharps firearm I received yesterday. My photos do not do it justice.

That is a very nice combination of metal and wood with some quality workmanship to put it all together.

Beautiful piece of wood Dave, can't say for certain if I have seen better. Congratulations, that is a very charming rifle of which not to many are seen out this way.

When Shiloh builds a rifle, they build a nice rifle. When they build a special rifle, they do a really wonderful job.
Congrats you really have something lovely and special. Many happy shooting sessions with that beauty.

It takes  a microscope to find a flaw in a Shiloh Sharps.  Their quality is always amazing.

Dave;
         Thinking out loud .  .  .  .

The displayed Shiloh rifle would make a wonderful raffle prize if it were to be re-donated to the A.S.S.R.A. (think tax deduction benefit) with the intended purpose that it be designated as a A.S.S.R.A. raffle prize; for the second time.

C.M.M.

Sorry. It is my first Sharps and it has found a permanent location at my residence regardless of the first claims by both of my sons.

ASSRA will have to wait until I win rifle four after I take care of my kid's needs first.

Maybe when I win rifle five since I have also been asked to donate it to the Canada-USA BPCRS Invitational.

Nice rifle Dave. I like everything about it.

You have plenty of time to get the paper work done, bring it to Tommy's this spring?

If so, can bring my Shiloh and challenge you to a side match.

OK Joe:

I assume it will be traditional iron sights or do you want to do traditional scope as well?

What are we shooting for? Bragging rights only? I have two pieces of your black walnut that have air dried about five years. Have anything else to trade?
How about checkering the stock on my .38-50 Remington Hepburn on a No. 1 Rolling Block that will be made from your walnut?

I have 30% tin alloy to put up for the trade. How many pounds would equal checkering my stock for me?

Dave

OK the shoot off will be iron sights with black powder in fixed cases. No duplex loads or breech seating.
The traditional way.

Eager to see your Sharps as well Joe.

On the weekend I used the 1874 Shiloh Sharps for the first time in a competition (other than when she edged out your Sharps at Nine Mill Falls Westerner).

I won my event with a 45 score.

The rifle was extremely good at maintining it's elevation.
I (the shooter) had problems with the Rams with winds of 13 to 14 mph with gusts up to 28 mph.

First time I shot her offhand. Took a while to figure out balance and follow through but still got 5 chickens.

To find sight settings I shot 60 rounds without cleaning. Not a speck of lead and only light fouling. I only blowed the barrel.

Rifle works great. Just have to fine tune the shooter now.

THX Again Shiloh for the rifle.

I will be bringing her to the 2014 Canadian Shiloh Invitational BPCR Silhouette match in July.

Dave and I had the Canadian VS American Shiloh showdown at Spokane. Congratulations go to Dave. Was a 30 shot iron sight match using black powder in the prone position using cross sticks.  Dave beat me by 7/8 inch over the thirty shots.

Way to go Dave!  Wink

She is performing extremely well.

It shot the most chickens (9) over three days at Bethune at the 2014 Canadian Shiloh Invitational Match.
It was a very gusty shoot and impossible to hold your rifle on a chicken.

8 Chickens: Bob Bouthillette
8 Chickens: Barry Blomert
6 Chickens: Gene Davids
6 Chickens: Pat Machan
5 Chickens: Ron Jordan
5 Chickens: Mike Puckett
5 Chickens: Don Bird

She is an impressive tack driver even under heavy gusty winds on the pigs.
The Masters at the shoot were quering me how it could hold elevation so perfectly.

My 50 grain load with a 410 grain Money bullet is a bit light and is falling asleep at the Rams.
Plan on testing heavier loads at the Canada-USA Invitational this weekend.

The .40-65 Shiloh's seem to be really accurate.  I use 58gr of FFFg Express in mine with a Saeco #740 bullet.  It sounds unlikely, but when shot off of the bench with fixed ammunition at 200m, it will consistently outperform my CPA #52 in .38-55 which is using breech seated bullets and black powder.  Ten shot groups at 200m are generally very close to 1 moa.

The lower recoil of the .40-65 makes it an excellent chicken gun.  Mine is a #3 stock which makes it hold well for me, offhand when shot off of the finger tips.

Yup I also shoot off my fingertips.

I started using 50 grains of Swiss FFFg.

Next step up in powder will be to 53 grains and then we will see if I need more.
My bullets are almost stabilized out to the Rams and I do not think I need too much more powder.
I am concerned about crushing my Swiss BP if I compress it too much.
At 53 grains I will have .230 compression.

Interesting.  I have about the same compression with my 58gr of FFFg Express.  I shoot fire formed cases with no sizing so perhaps have a tiny bit more case capacity, assuming you resize..

Yes I resize.
My rifle has a Match chamber so my cases do not gain hardly any capacity after they are fired.
My cases are considerably smaller diameter after firing than other fired .40-65 cases that I have compared them to.

Moving up to 53 grains Swiss FFFg reduced flyers to almost nill under constant wind but I still have erratic flyers with sporadic wind. The bullet is still very close to being unstable at 550 yards.

Everyone is suggesting I should move up to 56 grains for my .40-65. This will be .290 compression. Any thoughts on this much compression of Swiss powder?

CW QuarterHorse Can-US Invitational Chicken count over three days:

9 Chickens: Ron Jordan
9 Chickens: Dave Patterson
8 Chickens: Leo Bumphrey
8 Chickens: Ivan Couronne
6 Chickens: Gene Davids
6 Chickens: Gerard Miazga
5 Chickens: Charles Cumming
5 Chickens: Paul Lawrence
4 Chickens: Chris Wakelin
4 Chickens: Bob Murch
3Chickens: Mitch Boychuk
3 Chickens: George Andrix
2 Chickens: Harvey Trace
2 Chickens: Dwight Puckett
2 Chickens: Bernie Olanski

Most chickens in one event: 6 Chickens: Ron Jordon

My Shiloh is still a tack driver at shorter ranges.

Everything I've read suggests that's a lot of compression (too much) for Swiss. Goex likes more compression, But I wouldn't be afraid to try it. Maybe a pp bullet will do better?

John:

I spotted for a paper patcher this weekend.

Most of the time they shot real well.
But he kept running out of time wiping and could not get all his shots off.
A bit of extra fouling and the elevations would get really erratic on his PP bulets.
Also the throat fouled and he lost too much time trying to extract two bullets that jambed in the throat.

Maybe experienced paper patchers can load bullets better or they have rifle throats better matched for PP.
This guy finally gave up on day 3 and did much better with GG bullets.

In my case the rifle has no throat and would have to be modified to PP.

First time I watched a PP and he made me a bit nervous because of the time he needed to keep the barrel clean enough to shoot accurately.

And this was on a cool humid day. Would it not become more of a problem on hot dry days?

I'm a big fan of paper patching, but personally I think PP bullets are best for when you have lots of time to manage bore condition between shots.

I know there are a few people who've managed to make it work for them with silhouettes but I'd rather have the extra time so that I can read wind conditions, or even wait out a condition change.

It would be worse on hot, dry days. I'd much rather shoot gg than pp bullets. I'm too lazy! Smiley

Maybe another brand case, will get that tiny bit extra without more compression? You know a lot more than me, I just have ideas.  Cheesy

Beautiful rifle. A work of art.
Am shooting 64gr of 2F Swiss with ~0.10" of compression pushing a 420gr (casts at 413gr for me w/20-1) BACo M4 Money bullet  in my 40-65 Hepburn for the rams & 600yd target. My spotter shoots a 420gr Brooks bullet with 62gr of 2F Swiss in his 40-65 Shiloh at the same distances, though I do not know how much compression he is using, and shoots AAA scores. I'm using Win cases for the ram/600yd loads and believe my spotter is too. The same Money bullet with 58gr and 60gr of 2F Swiss and same 0.10" of compression knocked over 14/15 pigs & turkeys at the June match and won a 15-pig pin at Raton 2-weeks ago, so is a very accurate load. Am using Starline for the shorter distances and believe my spotter is using R-P. Once we get the chickens "under control", perhaps we will move up a class. My chicken load is 54gr of 2F Swiss pushing the Saeco 640 bullet. At this point it is not the load or rifle holding us back. Wink

For me, life is too short to PP, as I find all the steps in reloading to be a 'chore' so I can shoot. However, Brent Danielson was 2nd HOA in the BPCR scope matches at Raton 2-weeks ago shooting PP bullets. First time a PP shooter has placed, IIRC. It has taken him several years of effort to get there. Congrats to Brent for all his work and great results.

I'll add that using the loads above my spotter shot a 30 with 4-chickens and I shot a 28 with 4-chickens in yesterday's match. He was HOA and I won the scope class. Maybe we are learning to shoot. Wink

This year at Raton it was cooler and more humid from frequent rains. I wonder if this helped out Brent with his PP shooting?

Had not thought about the cool & damp weather (was ~50F each morning with a high ~70F with clouds and rain every day of the BPCR matches) helping with the PP, but could well have been. A young (25?) woman from Australia tied Brian Chilson for chickens with 17 and then won the shoot-off for high chicken. That she beat Brian was notable, but not as notable as the fact that she neither wiped nor blow-tubed when shooting her 15 animal strings. The cool, damp weather likely helped her with that.
