F.Y.I. an extremely rare and wonderful matched cased set starting with a Maynard First Model and three barrels, 2 of which are rifle barrels and the third is a shot gun barrel, all courtesy of Rock Island Auction house as Lot No. 3072

A sight to behold for the Maynard collector who would appreciate the finest of the fine.

That set looks like the one that sold at Julia's Auction a couple of years.

  Thanks Ron --
I am curious as to what the price was back then when the set changed ownership ?

According to the included text in the R.I.A. catalog, the set was Dr. Maynard's own personal kit built in 1845.  Did you notice the breech piece is set up to use Maynard's rolled tape primer system ?  The smaller photo just to the right hand side with the vertical orientation shows the circular door plate removed for loading the primer tape.

It probably should wind up is a museum where it will be well cared for under the management of a well trained and experienced conservator.

I did not notice the the picture for the tape feed. The one that i saw at Julia's did not have a tape feed. That set was a complete set as the one that was at auction.

Julia's has a 2 barrel Maynard coming to auction in 2 weeks lot # 1181 Poulin Auctions also hat a Maynard but I do not know the lot number.

Webb, thanks for posting this! It answers a question I've had for a long time. I've seen several blued levers on nice Maynard rifles over the years and wondered if they could have been original.

What a nice compact rifle/shotgun combination - it was even furnished with the Maynard-type "set" for the trigger! The paper punchers seem to really like the long tubes, but I prefer the handiness of ones such as this.

Does anyone know what the light-colored wooden tool does? Looks a little short for its French-fitted slot...

Pretty sure the light colored wooden tool is a replacement wad punch for loading the shotgun shells.  Bob

Yes! Of course!

I surely do prefer that style of buttplate over the Sharps type.

X-Timber-Man, I'm glad you enjoyed seeing it as much as I did.  Do you happen to remember the cased Maynard in the wood sided type wagon box from earlier in this year that we all discussed?  That carry box had a doomed recess in the lid and there were lots of opinions posted about the intent of that?  This set is quite different and seems to me to be more plausible to be a factory kit for the sportsman, and even possibly, the personal shooting kit of Dr. Maynard as the auction house suggests.

CMM,
I've seen several similar so-called French-fitted wooden cases with Maynards over the years - all percussion models. I'm pretty sure that's what the Mass. Arms factory supplied to well-heeled customers. One of them, housing a 2-barrel set, belonged to a friend here in Texas - so I was able to examine it closely at the time (30+ years ago). When he got ready to sell it, I wasn't interested - because it was a crummy percussion model.... What a dope I was..... Tongue

Hello Captain Bob --

I enjoyed meeting you in Winchester last week for the N-SSA Fall National match and was glad you introduced yourself.

I would have bought you a BEER had they been available, but coffee was the only beverage within 12 miles of town.  It was nice to gather and talk Maynards with John B. and Bruce and I learned some good Maynard information for the future.

I hope you will consider coming to Thurmont in the Spring and shoot one or more of your Maynards.

Regards,

Webb

The two barrel Maynard set at the Julia auction sold for $4600 including the buyer's premium.
