Trail Boss powder

Anybody tried loading original black powder cartridges with Trail Boss.
From the little I have read on the internet it would appear to be ok to load up to the base of the bullet with this powder and use in black powder rifles.
regards, Roly.

Don't think so.  For ex., the recommended load for .44-40, 6.5 g., only fills the case about half way.  6.5 is a light load & could be increased slightly, but the speed of TB makes it touchy to experiment with at near maximum charges.

No, no, a thousand times no.  A caseful of TB will get you pretty exciting peak pressure, but not much excitement in the way of velocity.   Frankly I have found no good use for it.  It's formulated for light loads, and light loads only, but Red Dot and Bullseye do that better and cheaper for me.  Only advantage I see is that it's so bulky that it's pretty much impossible to double charge.  The downside of that being that you don't even get a full pound of it in a normal size canister.

There's some loading rules-of-thumb on Hodgdon's web site.

BTW if you're anywhere near me in S.E. Ohio you can have what's left of the one bottle of TB I bought, gratis.   I could use the shelf space.

Ditto
Trail Boss has some impressive pressure spikes when trying to get any kind of velocity that approaches accurate. I have yet to hear of anyone getting good accuracy at 200 yards with it. It is mostly for cowboy action shooters who use it to hit a life size buffalo gong at 50’.

Well, that is a legit advantage--I can't handle Bullseye without worry about a double charge.  Just don't cough or sneeze while there's any uncovered TB in the room--otherwise you'll be sweeping it off the floor.

This is a question often asked.

My opinion is no good reason to use a powder developed for Cowboy Action shooters in fine single shoots were accuracy is the objective. Never saw a match won with Trail Boss

Works fine for .32 S&W (short) for my grandmother's S&W safety hammerless.

Maybe Nero wants to shoot a life size buffalo at 50'. Well, maybe?    Huh

Nah, nothing as big as that around here and as I'm not into witchcraft and black powder I thought it would be a way of shooting an old hammer cartridge rifle I have been offered.
I should have known if it sounds too good to be true it probable is.
Thanks for all the input.
Regards, Roly.

I use 13gr with a 350 gr Ranch Dog bullet in my Trapdoor and Danish Roller and get excellent results at 200 yards. Very accurate with both rifles. Pretty slow, but goes through the paper and I can use the original sights.

I get by with a little help from my friends !

My Trail Boss comment was intended for target single shots. If I had a big bore hunting rifle and no Black Powder available Trail Boss may be an acceptable substitute.

Same for a Trapdoor and 200 yard offhand shooting.  A few fellows shoot our 200 yard offhand match with Trail Boss, none do well. May be the shooters more than the powder.

Either one Big Bore or Trapdoor looking for smokeless loads 4759 would be my first choice.

My experiences are in line with what boats suggests.    I don't shoot a lot of smokeless, maybe a few hundred rounds a year, but I've had much better vertical dispersion with sr-4759 at 200 than I've had with trail boss.  Trail Boss can be fun for plinking or introducing new shooters to the .45-70 as you can get rid of most of the recoil.

I bought a couple of cans of TB to make some CAS level loads for my son's Vaquero. Those will hit a 14" target at 25' but I wouldn't bet my lunch money on hitting the same target at 50' with them. My estate sale will probably be selling the remaining 1.5 cans of it.
