Stevens 044 1/2 English Model

Print Post
I just purchased a Stevens 044 1/2 English in .25 RF with a mint bore and a Lyman # 2 tang sight.  Price was $795.  I am now wondering it I paid too much since I have no ammo for it??  I don't have it yet so all I can post are pics. by the seller.
Thoughts please!

You can always set the 25RF barrel aside until you stumble across some ammo, and have a 22RF barrel fitted. If you dig up or have a centerfire block made, you have even more options available.

If that tang sight shown in the photo is actually in the locked position, looks like it may be angled too far back to be vertical.

The rifle appears to be in nice shape!

BP

I asked the guy about the sight and was told it was not locked when the photo was taken.

I had been watching that one. Thought about trying to buy it but was on vacation and a little short of funds. I have a decent supply of ammo if you should decide to sell it I might be interested in it. Wood looks a little rough on it but the metal looks great and the sights are a plus. Personally I think you bought it right.

Nice Stevens there Smoke.
If you want to experiment  a little, dig around in the forum files for discussions about changing to a .25 Stevens CF.
You can make cases from .22 hornet, and  probably(?) fit a CPA CF breech block to it.
Give CPA a ring, and they can advise about parts interchangeability .
Worse case, keep an eye out for a spare RF block and re-drill the firing pin. Wink

The 044 1/2 is narrower than the factory Stevens 44 1/2, which means the breach block is narrower, the extractor is narrower, the lever boss is narrower, and the barrel shank is smaller in diameter.

A capable machinist can mill a block out of barstock.

That's why I included a question mark in my reference to CPA.
Didn't know if they offered parts for other Stevens actions or not.
But yeah, a capable machinist should have no trouble making up one of these.

Considering the condition, and the tang sight, I think you got a decent price on the Stevens Don! Yes, you'll have to do something with it if you want a shooter, but I'd probably leave it as it is myself and shoot others. I've also got a fair supply of Cannuck .25 RF ammo for a couple singles I have in the caliber, but I rarely shoot them.

J.W. The breech block measures .740 at the top and .753 at the bottom. The boss of the lever measure .500. These dimensions were measured with the rifle assembled, so they should be considered nominal.

You did pay too much.

I'll take it off your hands at no loss to you if you don't want it.

But then, I'm just a hell of a guy.

It wouldn't do either of you guys any good to have it. Unless you happen to be "Left Handed".  Right now it's sporting left handed furniture. Original furniture tucked away.
