Sure is pretty!

Rare Stevens model 51 on a 44 1/2 action. Ideal ""Schuetzen Rifle"" with a Stevens-Pope barrel.

It looks like a wind-gauge front sight has been removed.   What is a "rotary sight"?   AH HA!!!!  it must the rotating disc insert in the tang sight

If it's "Right" fits my idea of perfect, even to the straight grip.

Have been in Collectors shop often not cheap but square dealers far as I know  Ever in Houston it's a required stop

The front sight is what's left of a King Triple bead sight.
You rotated it to select one of the three available front bead colors that was most suitable, hence a rotary front sight.

Too bad that front sight is so beat up. Originally it would have had 3 beads. One Ivory, one brass and one black. I have one on my 1894 Winchester carbine in 38-55.

I have seen a couple that had a red bead substituted for the ivory, but don't know if King offered the option or someone made the change afterwards.

I have a Pope formerly owned by John Amber. Its a 2 barrel rifle. The breech loading barrel has one of those rotating front sights.

My guess is it was changed after the factory. Ought to be possible to find something more suitable.

Collectors will probably knock thousand of so off due to the sight issue

I don't think Stevens offered this rotary front sight or a windgauge as standard on the #51 Stevens-Pope, but I guess anything could be ordered from the factory. I would like to be able to see the engraving a little better, it appears to be very much like my Stevens-Pope.   ledball

Interesting,   now that you describe it I can see it Embarrassed.   Thats a new one on me.    I have had German singleshots that had a "rotary sight" with four different posts on a wheel. But their wheel rotated in a slot on the base on an axel that was perpendicular to the bore line rather than parallel to it.
Now for my further education is that a "Pope barrel" that H.Pope actually made/mounted while he was there; or one of the ones made in his name after he left--------how can you tell?

In regards to my Pope barrel with the rotating front sight, all I can tell you is that Mr Amber said it was on the  barrel when he got it. It seems likely that Pope's customer asked him to use that sight since both barrels were in 32/40 and the breech loading barrel being shorter and lighter was intended for hunting.
