Charlie Dells barrel ringing tests should be heeded, so keep the wad off the powder by about 200 thousandths, I believe that is what DW was making referance to.

Gentlemen prefer blondes?
I married a brunette. Now she's a blonde. Just as lovable.

Coool.

Now.  WHAT IS FLORAL FOAM.

How about an MSDS or SOMETHING that defines it.

(I think it is expanded polystyrene.  But then it could be ...)

Nasty stuff that!  The wife is a florist, she uses it all the time.  It does incinerate well though.  I have a few 1/16" thin sheets I cut with a wire and have used a few times.  I may try again down further in the case instead of at the mouth only.

I take a match to it, if it melts I don't use it. The foam I use turns to dust.

Same here Brice, if it melts your looking at possibly ringing your barrel or dang near as bad not being able to get it cleaned out of the barrel.

CW I get mine at the local floral supply store, I get the 6"X3"X3" blocks. Doubt if anyone has a MSDS sheet handy and if so it might differ from a product found in your area.

Looking at the links, there were several DISTRIBUTERS identified.  (one step closer to the manufacturer)  AND with the brand names identified it is matter of chasing out the MSDS - it has to be published!  (I've even kept the MSDS from the original Alox lube that a friend of mine and I bought a bucket of years ago.)

It did seem that formaldehyde was mentioned.

I now know why f.f. foam wads are used. So easy.
From a purely functional point of view, is there any reason to use other materials? Cork, gasket material, veggie fiber, shirt cardboard, egg carton, etc., etc.?

I like cork and others because they will scrape a certain amount of crud out the barrel.  (Leaving a consistant surface from shot to shot.)

I use 1/16" LDPE wads cut to .002 over groove size. You can use them at the bench w/o problems.

I tried FF wads at the bench and gave up on them real fast. The slightest breeze blows them on the ground.

If you pre-load your cases they would work great but, I've never done that.

I used a 30 thousandth vegetable fiber wad inserted in the seater thus directly behind of the base of the bullet for about 5 years, before that 1/16 cork. I didn't need a wad to keep the powder from spilling, it was used to protect the base of the bullet and it also provided additioal gas seal. Shot some of my best targets with the wads, just got lazy and moved away from it for the time being.
