Thanks to Jeff Phelps, I now know that M. S. Hendricks of Aroura, IL, made this rifle. Once Jeff told me that, I called Dennis Hrurosky who collects IL long guns and lives near Aroura. Dennis gave me loads of great info, including the fact that what I though were tiny Malcolm mounts were actually made by Hendricks.

Not only people who know single shots, but some with young eyes and memories. My original posting on Double gun to get an idea of who made this rifle included this photo of some tiny checkered triangles that I was sure was the stockmaker's signature.

Sure enough my friend Jeff who came up with the answer from seeing this photo in an August 1995 auction catalog. I am showing this below in a 1:1 picture.

I have no idea how he managed to see the triangles from that photo or remember it 18 years later. This is a highly magnified image of them.

I thought about that as well. Of course the original pistol grip stock would have been a big help in identifying it. Still, the ejector and short throw hammer point to that or could have been improvements done by Hendrick.
