This is the one MadMike spotted at a Cabelas advertized as a Model 47. I assumed it was a 49, but with a 30" barrel it weighs 11 lbs 10 oz, which might make it a 52. The bore is beautiful and it shoots great with 32/40 fixed lead loads. As soon as I get a chance, I'll cast up some proper tapered bullets for breech loading, although with my old eyes I'll have to put a target scope on it to do any better. It has a nice Stevens' rear sight with the strangest globe front I have ever seen. If any of you have any info only it, please let me know.

Front sight looks like a Redfield # 60 with a Vaver-Wittek # 35-LS shade attached.

Did Redfield make that sight for the wide Stevens dovetail?

Could be a Lyman I guess. What does it say on the sight? Pretty sure Redfield made the large dovetails.

Nice Stevens you did well.
I think Joe is right both counts. I have tried those screw in sunshades, never made any difference, if you had some adverse back light perhaps,
Screw it out and put in a proper Lyman retaining nut. Make it look a lot better while you look for a Stevens front

Mike,
As I said, I stop at that store once a year and wouldn't buy anything from it or any other Cabelas sight unseen. Its not dishonesty, its more a matter of no one knowing what they are doing. I noticed that they have already marked down the grossly overpriced Ballard that they got with the Pope. BTW the Pope number on the bottom of the barrel indicates it was made during Pope's short time at Stevens.

I have seen a couple of Stevens at Cabelas in the past that were extremely under priced because they apparently do not always know what they actually have. Unfortunately for me they were already sold when I called. Would sure like to pick up a Pope Stevens for that price.
