Introducing myself and some friends

Hello everyone,
I've been reading this forum as a guest for a couple of years but only joined recently. My hope is to pick your expert brains on the subject of Schuetzen style rifles.  Which I will attempt to do over in the Single Shot Rifles section. But I decided to start my first post here in the Photos section since it seemed a good way to introduce myself to the group by showing you some of what I currently take to the range.  They are all .45-70. The top two rifles are Shiloh No. 3 sporter with 34" heavy and a Saddle Rifle with 30".  The bottom is a C. Sharps built High wall with 30" No. 3 barrel.

Welcome Spikemiller,

You have some nice rifles there, glad you decided to post the photos an introduce yourself. There are a great group of people here on the forum and I am sure you will be well received. I shoot BPCR when I can and just had a great time at the Quigley. Let us know where you are located and possibly we can get you to attend some of the matches put on by the ASSRA.

  Hi Spike --
The Shiloh Sharps are a piece of work and highly sought after.  I had the pleasure of shooting one yesterday evening in the 45-100 cartridge that belonged to a friend.

I hear that you want to become a schuetzen shooter, do I have that right?  And do I have it correct that you are starting from square one?

If the answer to both questions is yes, then I have a question to ask you.  What books do you either own, or have read, during the most recent six months that were dedicated entirely to either schuetzen history, schuetzen rifles, or schuetzen marksmen, past or present ?

It is nice to make your acquaintance and I wish you much success and enjoyment from your new endeavor we simply call "schuetzen".

Welcome. Nice rifles. The Shiloh is as good as it gets. Have a Pedersoli myself but he Shiloh is the Cadillac. There are a lot of knowledgeable people here and they are always willing to help.

Thanks slumlord44.  you're right there are a lot of knowledgeable people here and I'm learning a lot already.  I love those Shilohs and had the pleasure of being in Big Timber MT in April and visiting both Shiloh and C. Sharps.  I was there to pick up a .22LR low wall that C. Sharps had built for me. A sweet gun as well with an MVA scope.  What made the trip even better was a big, late season snow storm moved in forcing me to stay and extra couple of days.  I like that state and didn't want to leave.

Hi C.M.M.
You got it right.  I'm a newbie to the Schuetzen game but highly enthusiastic and ready to build my first rifle.  From childhood I've had three main hobbies.  American history, natural history and shooting.  I suspect I'm not alone and the late 19th century single shots are a great connection to all three interests.  I'm a biologist so one of the hobbies actually gives me a paycheck.
The only Schuetzen specific book on my shelf is R.S.W's  beginner's guide.  I have many of the other history books such as Cambell's 2 vol set on Winchester SS, Seller's book on Sharps, and Dutcher's book on Ballards Is there an equivalent book on Stevens?  I have a few of Venturino's and Mathews' books on BPC and subscribe to SPG's magazine along with ASSRA journal and SS Exchange.

And I love pouring through all of these books and magazines regularly so if you have some suggestions of what else I should be looking at I am truly eager to know.

Thanks for the warm welcome SSS. I'm in Albuquerque.   I should have joined in long ago and will post more photos of SS rifles in my cabinet when I take some more photos.  The Quigley match is high on my list of things to do, so hopefully I'll see you there next year.

I couldn't be more in agreement with you on the subjects of American history, natural history and rifle shooting.  You mentioned that you grew up in Pennsylvania and I presently live near Gettysburg and have the opportunity to participate in the history component that the area has to offer.

When I worked in Washington, D.C., my children were nurtured in the various subjects of history and we were frequent visitors to the numerous history collections that the location had to offer.

The schuetzen sport is over 150 years old in America and in my opinion the historical evolution from, say the American Civil War, up until the late 20th Century is often missed, or intentionally overlooked, by new participants coming to our ranks.  I can readily see that for you, that will not be the case.

My very best wishes to you, and a Happy Independence Day in Albuquerque,

Creedmoormatch

I grew up in Delaware County PA closer to Philly but spent many summers in my teens working on a farm near Zions View, close to York, PA. Did my undergrad at State College.  Spent a lot of time tromping all over Gettysburg and Sharpsburg as a kid.  Been thinking about those times a lot this week with the anniversary.   My Mom still lives in Elizabethtown near Hershey so I get back to the area as often as I can.

Here are some images of a .22LR Low Wall C. Sharps did for me.  26" #1 barrel.  scope and sights from MVA.  It's 4th of July but those fine folks at MVA still called me today to tell me they are about to ship a scope I ordered for another rifle.  I was glad to get the call.

Yes, the folks at MVA are wonderful people to do business with.  I would be hard pressed to find a better sight over what is manufactured and offered by MVA.  That is a stunning rifle and I would have to conclude that it shoots as well as it looks.

Thanks Creedmoormatch.  The low wall has been a lot of fun and challenging.  Which is one way of saying the rifle shoots better than me.
